New Keeper (SOON)

Greetings all, name is Matt I am 33 soon (hence Posting here Betta for Birthday) and live in Leeds, UK. I have never owned or cared for a fish (well had Oranda in my parents pond years ago) but thought it would make a nice addition for my home to de stress and have some more natural distractions around. Plus would look nice amongst my Orchid Terrarium's.

So for a little while now (roughly 2months) I have wanted to become a keeper for a Betta. I have been researching tanks and so far have narrowed it down to the following two; would it be possible to gain some feedback on these from people who have used them?
Fluval Chi II (19L roughly 4.2 gallons)
Fluval Spec (as above)

Are these two suitable for keeping a single Betta and potentially some Shrimp, I have been reading that it maybe difficult to heat lower than 5 Gallon tank effectively?

Also Male versus Female what is the difference if any between the sexes apart from the aesthetic?

Finally I want to make a "Floating Vegetation" tank for my Betta, what sort of plants should I be looking at for this? I want it to look like a rice Paddy aquaculture if at all possible

Cheers Guys, looking forwards to chatting with you all and gaining your knowledge.

Welcome to the forum, Mat.
I can't advise on tank size in accordence to heaters. But in general, if you could heat it, 19ltr is enough for one betta. However, bettas might snack on the shrimps.

And as for male/female - thats personal preference. Both have similar needs, both may be equally active and aggressive. Personally, I prefer males as they are more vibrant.

I mainly use anacharis and cabomba, either anchored or left floating. They grow pretty fast and can eventually adapt to low light. You can group them in 3-5 per anchor and bunch them to create a secure hide out for the betta.

Looking forward to seeing your little buddy soon.

Thanks for the welcome @indjo .

I popped into my local pets/aquatics store last night on the way home (as well as multiple lunch breaks) and have more or less decided on the Fluval Spec V tank for my first Betta. For me it looks more appealing plus it is a longer rectangular tank as opposed to the taller thinner tanks I have seen around.

Have found a couple of heaters as well so will most likely be picking up those this weekend. My plan is then to set up the tank and the aquascaping and leave to cycle for a little while before purchasing my Betta.

I think I am going to get Females as I have been reading about Sororities and would like to try it in the long run (in a MUCH larger tank of course) but that is a pipe dream.

Thank you for the plant recommendations, I like the look of the Cabomba as well as some of the Dwarf Hair Grass, might give those a go first and see how I like the look, I have a feeling that I most likely won't get the Betta until I am happy with the Vegetation and Decoration in the tank.
