Smile Back again!

Wow, it's been a long time!! I don't think anybody will remember me, but I was a member here a couple years ago, when I was in middle school. I had to leave betta keeping for a while due to life (and highschool. Urgh) and I honestly wasn't planning to get back into it until I was finished with college.

Yeah, you all know how that goes.

Long story short, I made the mistake of going into Petsmart, and then I walked past the bettas. And there was this one little guy, all the way at the back, looking so sad. I went over to say hi to him, and he just stared right into my face with his little betta eyes and little betta frown, and his name is now Mr. Poseidon. He's currently living in a 20 gallon long I had from my old betta days, living like a king but with the dignity of a half-starved peasant. (We disagree about how much food he needs to eat in a day. This is the only battle with him that I will win.)

Anyways, I've had him for about 4 weeks now, but it already feels like years. (The fact that on week 2 he got some major ich did not help with my lifespan). I need to get him some good silk plants, because right now he only has a couple. It's been so long since I was in the hobby though; does anybody have some good recommendations? ie from Amazon or Petco. He does have some tankmates that I got when I brought him, including some tetras & cories. (I lost a lot of the tetras during the ich outbreak, unfortunately , so I'm going to quarentine some new ones after midterms).

I'll try and post some pictures tomorrow, after I give them a waterchange! (they get 25% 3 times a week because water changes are so fun. I've missed doing them.)

Now, here's something about me! Hi, I'm Megan, a freshman at college and I'm working to get a BS in Mathematics. I've been in love with bettas since I was seven, and the first one I ever got was Pippin, a red double tail who was the light of my life. I also have other pets, including cats, a dog, and a hamster. (the hamster is living in my 55 gallon. I am conflicted about this.)

I'm really excited to re-meet everybody from the last time I was here, and I'm really excited to see all the new faces and fins!

Also, is the how high can we count until a moderator thread still going? Just asking...as the person that stayed up super late to help set the current record lol)

Welcome back! Sorry to hear about the ich outbreak & the tetras.

For your silk plant question I'd love to help out; I used to shop strictly at PetSmart before moving to more local shops, yet most still have similar silk plants. PetSmart's collection (my memory of such is limited as I shopped a while back, lol) is not as big as any local places, perhaps as expected, though there are still a few I'd suggest in order to get what fairly you paid for. I would suggest large-leafed silk plants, as they tend to take up a decent bit of room in a 20 long, but still leave plenty of room for lots of other plants.

Additionally, make sure the height is taken care of; a lot of plants won't reach too tall and therefore leaves a lot of room that is plantless up top. There are a few plants that solely reach upward and are considerably tall for that reason, but there are also plants that have decently large leaves that will be able to help with that. Also, a lot of the bottoms of tanks won't be too covered either, though smaller plants/plants with more leaves at the base can definitely help with that. Don't be afraid to grab a plastic plant if you know it won't tear your betta's fins, most of them will be fine and are pretty, too!

As you can tell . . . I like plants. Though again, welcome back!

Thank you, that's really helpful advice! I guess plastic plants must have gotten better since I last did betta stuff, because all the ones I remember were pretty rough.(I do have some though, because these ones past the pantyhose test.) I hadn't thought about the height aspect either, so I'll definitely keep that in mind the next time I shop for plants! (Which will be way to soon. I love spoiling my babies.) You really do seem to like plants, but that's awesome! Fish really like them too, so I imagine it's a pretty good combination!

Also, I managed to get some phone-quality photos this morning after the water change, so here's Mr Poseidon, patrolling the back of the tank and pretending he didn't flee there when faced with The Evil Phone.

Thank you! Mr Poseidon thinks it's pretty fantastic too! 20 gallon longs are my favourite aquariums to keep personally because they're small enough that I can actually do water changes without a step ladder but they're big enough that I have plenty of stocking options. (I then cut down those options by about 90% because I choose to add bettas to them, but it's the theory that counts I guess)

Welcome back! I recently just came back too! Reading that part about the ich outbreak, agh! Ich is so frustrating and I had issues with it years ago in an 18g guppy tank I had. For silk plants, I've been impressed with petco's selection lately. I've just been browsing around online since I'll probably get some silk plants to mix in with live plants when I get a new tank going, but to me it looked like they had the bigger selection than petsmart did!

Thank you for the warm welcome! Ich's the worst, isn't it? I was actually really fortunate this time. It only took me about 4 days and 10 total water changes to get rid of it completely. Really? Petco's getting a better selection? That's awesome! (To be fair, it wouldn't be hard for them to beat my petsmart when it comes to silk plants. As long as they have more than four, they'll win!) I'll have to check my local one this weekend. Also, good luck on your new tank! Hopefully you can get it set up smoothly!
