Prime and ammonia readings

I am cycling a new tank, and I had an ammonia reading. I added some prime, and the ammonia reading was the same after. Since prime temporarily converts ammonia into ammonium, wouldn't the reading be different after?

2.5G - 1 female betta: "Miss Cleo"
5.5G - 1 betta: Half-moon King "Cobalt"
10G (with 4G of water) 1 female betta "Grace"
29G - 1 gold marble angelfish "Bartholomew"
1 Male fancy guppy "Guplet"

Most tests show total ammonia, which includes both free ammonia and ammonium.

Oh I see. Thanks. It's the API master freshwater test kit if that makes any difference...

+1 on what jaysee said. The tests won't differentiate between ammonia and ammonium. The presence of either one (or both) will give you a "positive" result.

What's the pH in your tank?
At lower pH's (more acidic, pH reading of less than 7), ammonium is favored.
At higher pH's (more alkaline/basic, pH reading higher than 7), ammonia is favored.

If your water isn't naturally on the acidic side, you can add a tannin source (IAL, oak leaves, driftwood, etc). This will help lower the pH a little, and cause some of the ammonia (bad) to convert to ammonium (OK).

My pH is 7.6, but he tank won't cycle with a low pH, which is what I want it to do...

Tank will cycle with a lower ph as long as it doesn't go too low. If the ph is too high it probably won't cycle either.

Well it's 7.6 so I think we're good. The pH at my house (the betta tank) is 8.4 and the tank is cycled.
