New Community Tank Questions?

Hello, everyone! It's been a few years since being on this site. But, as I am now planning a new Community Tank, I couldn't think of a better place to ask these questions!
I recently got a new 20 Gallon tank, complete with Filter and Heater. I plan on cycling it soon, but I would first like to know what fishys I want to stock it with.

At first I was thinking of adding 7 Neon Tetras, 5 Male Platys, 5 Albino Cory Cats and 1 Dwarf Gourami. Firstly, would this be overstocked? If not, how many more fish could I add before reaching capcity? Would all these fish get along?

I understand with all male Platys there could be some issues, which brings me to my second option. Having both Male and Female Platys. If I let them have the babies in the open water, would all the fry be eaten? What solitary predator fish would eat the fry, but not harm the parents? I always have wanted Neon Tetras, would they work in this set up, if so how many?

What other stocking ideas do you think would work? In whatever community I end up with, I absolutly want Neon Tetras. I would also like more colorful fish, but no guppies.

Thank you guys so much for your help! It's good to be back on the forums

Is that a 20 long or high? It makes a difference.

You could try playing around with AqAdvisor,

It is a 20 Gallon High. Sorry for neglecting to mention that part!

I think you are a bit overstocked. The platys will be an issue, even if you go with all females. Most likely they are going to be pregnant before you even get them home. As for a predator that will eliminate the fry? When I was a kid, swordtails did the job for me but a 20 high is too small for them. What about more tetras instead of the platys? Lemon tetras are beautiful and would contrast nicely with the neons. Black phantoms are cool too.

I'm not crazy about the gourami. I like to keep things old world/new world. He would make a good center piece I must admit.

Have you thought about a substrate yet? Cory cats prefer sand.

The platy (and any other carnivorous fish) will eat the fry (if you get any, which with females, you will) if they aren't fed enough. Or you can do like me, and just rehome them when they're big enough if they survive. Luckily my first platy only had 5 fry, the second one looks like she could deliver at any time...

I would also check AqAdvisor. I'm going to be setting up a similar community tank here in the next few weeks, but only a few different kinds of fish. Mine will be a 20 long, as tetras and such like the length to swim about.

If you decide to do a fish in cycle, platy are actually really hardy little fish and they did great cycling my 10g I have now. The tetras are super delicate fish and should only be added once the cycle is well established.

Good Luck!

@MikeG14 - I have never thought of Lemon Tetras but they sure are beautiful! I'm seriously considering them and other Tetras instead of the platies. The tank will definitely have sand for the Corys!

@ellekay - I checked AqAdvisor and it said the tank was a bit over stocked. After more research I am definitly going to try and re-adjust the stocking list.

@givemethatfish - No, I haven't gotten the fish yet. I've been traveling a lot lately and I am waiting for a time where I can be home for the cycling process.
