Question What type of fish is this?

I know this doesn't have that much to do with betta care, but I posted this on the compatibility forum and got no reply and I thought more people would see it here, and plus, I mean they are living with my betta. So recently I netted three of these little fish out of a pond near my house and put them in my tank. The pond they came from has no flow and lots of algae and plants. I have a lot of plants now and thought it would be ok and they are doing so much better than I expected and my betta does not mess with them at all! The reason I got them is because I thought they resembled plain fancy guppies but there is no way that's possible because in NC the temperature fluctuates too much for guppies to live in the wild. So what I was wondering is, what are these fish? Does anyone know? They were swimming in a large school at the surface of the pond when I got them. Picture below (sorry if it's upside down or sideways). They like to dart around so I could only get a decent picture of one.

Oh and to add to this, the anal fin when spread looks like a upside down check mark and one of them has a vertical black stripe over each eye.

I believe its a minnow. they sell them in pet stores as feeders (I have a few and they look just like that), though I dont recall the specific species name

Mosquito fish. If it came from a pond, thats probably what it is. They are livebearers, just like guppies.

Edit: the one pictured is the male, the females have shorter anal fins and a black spot.
