Ghost Shrimp Deaths

Hello Everyone!

I had 3 ghost shrimp in with my Betta, and everyone seemed to be doing great! The shrimp had been in for a few weeks or more. Yesterday I noticed a weird red spot on one of my shrimp (the largest one). I know that ghost shrimp often have little red spots or bands of color, but this was an entirely new and very large. I checked on the shrimp throughout the day, and noticed the shrimp was turning white on the inside, starting from the red spot and moving out towards the rest of the body. By yesterday night the shrimp was cloudy. This morning that shrimp is dead. Does anyone have any idea what could have happened?

Thank you!

This seems to happen to all my ghost shrimp as well. I have them for a few months and then they all slowly turn white and then die. Mine seem to get weird black dots on them and then start turning white.

I know they are often handled roughly at the pet stores as they are considered feeders so they are fragile and susceptible to a lot of bacterial infections. They also have a very short life span.

I have heard things such as you need to add Iodine to their diet and the tank needs to have a lot of airflow. You might want to research that.

What was the size of your shrimp when it died? Was it very large or a baby. I’ve always noticed mine get very large and die. The smaller they stay the longer and healthier they live. I feel like mine might be missing something they need to molt properly.
Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.
