New tank Buddy!

So I am happy to announce I added a new addition to my 40 gallon tank! another F8Puffer! for a while now I have been wanting another one along side my other puffer Copter but I was too nervous on the personality this new one might bring. Being that I have about 7 BBGs in the tank and my older puffer, adding a new friend is a gamble. So as time went on, I was seeing that my older puffer was not being as active and bored. (that and his teeth needed to be trimmed which I did) so I took a chance and went to the store where I adopted my first F8 puffer. They had ONE left with the GSPs. I watched his behavior closely for a good 20 minutes decided if he/she was the right one. See that the puffer was not picking on the GSPs and the GSPs weren't picking on him either (no bite marks) I decided to adopt him out! I got the new puffer home, dripped acclimated him (calling him a boy cause have no idea the sex on them) and added him in with my other boy Copter. At first they were establishing territory showing one another who's boss. And the new puffer left the BBGs alone. After about an hour, they seemed to calm down and start following one another. Granted when it came to food time, the new puffer was scaring Copter away but after a few weeks in his new home they started eating together. Having another puffer in the tank with Copter also helped him to be more social towards me and eat more!

I am very happy with my decision on doing this. It was scary yes but I was able to send the puffer back to the store after if he didn't get along with my tank mates.

so everyone Meet Heli and Copter. LOL!

Instead of Betta, I really, really want a Pea Puffer for two of the sections of my divided 20 long. But I am afraid I am too lax in maintenance. I do feed frozen and live and am not adverse to buying pest snails for them but I understand they need perfect conditions 24/7. We often go out of town for 2-4 weeks at a time with no feeding. This has never been an issue for the ADF, Betta or Nano fish but I'm afraid it would be too much for the Puffers. Do you agree?

Hmm, well I'd say it would be just fine. I have gone without cleaning the tanks, (10 gallon and 15 gallon) for about 2 and a 1/2 weeks one time and they seem to do just fine. Granted I feed my fish like every other to every three days so that might be the reason. Pea puffers I have to say are easier than their larger cousins, They don't require hard foods to keep their teeth trimmed and no need for trimming them like the F8 brats I have. LOL So you can go feed them frozen foods without worry. I only give my pea puffers snails when I get them from a friend of mine. They do love the snails and the hunt but if you have live foods, I'm sure they will love those types too! What I would do, if I was going on vacation for 2 to 4 weeks, I would water change everyday until the day I leave and that way it should be good to go until I got back. I know you are not a fan of buying snails but I know petmart or petco have pest snails all the time that they would love to get rid of! Maybe throw some snails before you leave on vacation so they have a meal or two? At least that's what I would do. I would do that for my F8 puffers as well. Get the tank good and ready until I leave and plop in snails, or even live shrimp!

I have two pea puffers that live with other fish AND shrimp. But my two are pretty chill. I hope you do end up getting some. they are so much fun to own!

Thanks for the reply. You give me hope. I really like Pea Puffers and my maintenance isn't really bad; but sometimes I only do water changes 1x per month on the 20 longs (which is where they would live). If we are going out of town I will follow your advice on water changes prior to leaving.

If and when I get them I will check out PetSmart for snails. I'm not anti-buying snails; just don't normally support my local PetSmart because of the awful Betta advice and care. PetCo is much much better but is also further away. They try to convince people a 2.5 gallon w/heater and filter is the minimum and a heater is a must.

you're very welcome! At times I get lazy too for my tanks. I almost went with no cleaning up to a month and they are a lot smaller than a 20 gallon!

really, you don't need snails so no worries there. Mine eat bloodworms most of the time and the little shrimplets that breed in the tank. They really don't pick on the older shrimp. Do you have a LFS near by? I wonder if they have some snails. otherwise I just bought a butt load of snails in the mail. SNAIL MAIL. lol!

I see that msjinkzd gives free pest snails. When she starts restocking and selling again I'll give her a shout to add them in with my Neons. I may ask her about getting in some Pea Puffers, too.

Gary's not much of a "fish" person but he does like watching the Neons. Maybe he'll like watching the Pea Puffers, too.

perfect! the puffers will love that when they see all the snails about. one minute you will have an infestation, the next empty shells. haha

oh yes, My little pea puffers are so fun to watch. I have my 15 gallon tank close to my bed and the pea puffer in there will just look at me hoping I would get up to feed him. XD

I just added some snails with my puffers now and they are on the hunt.

let me know when you get them and if you have any questions I am here to answer them!

Very very cute. I had been considering puffers for awhile now. May I ask you a question? I live in Houston so every September(hurricane season) is very stressful for me in terms of fish safety. Should I not even consider puffers if I don’t have a generator? My tanks all have backup battery air stones and I’m prepared to do daily massive water changes if disaster strikes. I’ve just heard they like tip top conditions. If it’s not a great idea I won’t do it.
