End of summer Project

I found myself looking through close out stock at a small pet store around Pittsburgh PA. just to see what they might have of interest. I was looking over a table full of tanks and parts the sign said anything on the table $3.00. There was a box on the floor under the table and I ask the lady if the sign meant that box too. She looked at the box and back at me and said Sure why not. That box was an unopened 10 gallon Tetra starter kit. It came complete with really cheep plastic LED hood. and a Tetra 10 internal filter. I had better at home in my junk closet. So I said What the heck and gave her the three bucks.

I have been trying to figure out what to do with it ever since. Well I woke up one morning whit this tank just sitting there. I threw together a stand and set the tank up. It held water (I was in business). I scrapped the hood after taking the LED light string off it, I put in an Aqueon 10 LED filter, added an Eheim 50 watt submersible heater that I had laying around (I couldn't use it in any of my 5.5 gallon because it was too high. ) It is a great heater and it works well for this 10 gallon. I put in 15 lb. of white sand substrate I had left over and added small white pebbles (another 15 lb. to give me a 2 inch base. I added a piece of drift wood I had from another tank and I don"t think it will stay in this tank either depending on the fish I'll be putting in.)

Today makes it a month and a half I have had this tank up and running. I still didn't know what fish to put into it until today. I found a beautiful Blue HM giant gene boy out of California and pulled the trigger on him this morning. He will be here around Thursday. I'm really excited about him. and I finished the tank today with planting some very nice plants I found at a friends in Erie PA. ( yep went up today just to get some great plants) I also found some really pretty rocks. I added a bubble wand (6 inch) to give it some needed aeration.

So tell me what you think.

OH great, good to know. Thanks Russell you know this panic attack is because of you, Right. LOL.

I went out to Petco today and found 5 ember tetra and I'll go out to Petsmart tomorrow in Erie and get the other 5 I wanted. I think the color flash in the plants will be great. In a month or so I'm going to put in a shoal of pygmy cory. I have to wait until the tank matures and can handle the bio load for all.

Ginger did name this new boy. (since he is from California ) she named him (wait for it) That's right Cal. So Cal will be here Friday and everything will be ready.

I wanted to mention the plants and decor that has gone into this tank.

3 18 inch high African water ferns that spread across the entire tank in the back and all across the top of the tank. These rhizome plants were so beautiful and yes they might have been way too big for this tank but well worth it. In between the African rhizomes I placed 3 really nice bunches of Bacopa Caroliniana They are weighted and not planted and fill in the gaps of the rear of the tank. I also placed two really nice chunks of gray rock that has bands of sparkle in them. to the front of the left side of the rock I planted two medium Java fern. To the center of the tank there is a nice piece of driftwood and in front of it I placed 2 medium Anubias Nana. Finally on the right side front I place another larger chunk of the Gray rock and in front of it I planted a medium Asian Water fern. and sprinkled through out are some flat black pebbles just to break up the white substrate.

I also added a 6 inch bubble wand centered in the tank at the bottom along with the thermometer, and PH, and Ammonia alerts.

If cal doesn't like his new home I have other boys that would love to take his place.

Well just looked at the tracking from USPS and they say he is out for delivery today. A day early I'm glad I didn't plan on doing anything else today. Now I'm pacing the floor waiting for the delivery. I truly hope and pray that he arrives safely. I know the seller has done his part in making sure he is packed right. (Yes I'm one of those that worry quite a bit. )
