Reptile lid that allows light penetration?

https://www.amazon.com/Exo-Terra-Scr.../dp/B00LH2AQJA would this lid allow good light penetration from a finnex 24/7 led light? It says max Uv penetration but idk what that really means for aquariums. I don't want a glass top cause I know I won't clean the water stains off.

If that mesh top is a no can someone suggest one or tell me what I should be looking for? Does craft mesh allow light penetration? I could just lay it on the rim.

They make these in a hinged version. That's the one I used with no light issues on my 10. You can cut the mesh to fit filter and heater cords. Spray with clear or black Krylon Fusion spray paint as they will rust from the back splash of the filter.

BTW, I'm thinking of doing the same thing for the same reason. And you can spray them white if you wish instead of black.

I can't remember, do you have a planted tank? And this works on it? Everything I've read said it would be bad for planted tanks, but that was mostly forums. I'm really trying to give my carpet a boost and thought I'd have to get a glass top. So I'm going to be sooo excited if you tell me you have a planted tank and this works lol

Yep, I have planted tanks. And I am seriously thinking of going back to them. I noticed no difference in plant growth between the screen-topped 10 and those in open or glass canopied.

Ask others how dirty glass impacts plants? I understand it's quite a bit. Also ask how many are speaking from experience? Or how many have measured PAR in a tank with a screened top?

True! What kind of light were you running with it? The only thing I saw closest to "speaking from experience" - I can't remember what I was googling, I think something about lights, and ended up on some random forum and they were talking about huge algae spikes and maybe 5 or so people said they "put a screen over the tank for a week and then took it off and it was fine after that" but no one specified what type of screen or anything like that.

I have heard how badly dirty glass effects the lights and I know I won't clean it so I don't want to even go there lol.

But the 2 petcos that are closest to me are completely out of 20gL, according to online. The one closest to me is out of every size from 2.5-75 except for 10g and 29g. So I might not be getting a new tank after all.. I've never needed to buy a tank right at the end of the sale so I've never kept up with how their inventory works so no idea if they'll be getting more in. It seems weird to go a full month of the sale with only 2 sizes left but it is only a sale so idk. I thought about calling but they are completely clueless. last time I called about something they said it was out of stock but being delivered in 2-3 hours, so I went to the store and they were like "we have nothing being delivered today for any department and we've never even stocked that item ever" and so many other times of calling to ask if they carry something, they put me on hold to ask the right person, come back and say yes and that it's in stock, go all the way down there and find out it's something they've never sold or stopped selling a year prior. That's happened to me so many times I literally stopped shopping there lol.

This vid (uploaded by aqua pros) randomly popped up in my recommended so I started watching it, just testing a light basically and then he flashed over to his regular tank that has his regular light on it and this is the top he has on it.

I think your right in what you've been saying, that screentops are fine. On every forum and article I've read it's said "screen not recommended cuts light by 40%. If you use mesh it has to be clear because the black also cuts light by 40%"

I think screen tops probably don't work for some people for a random reason but it somehow became gospel.

I used two Finnex Stingray fixtures...but I use two Stingray's on all but the 5.5 and 2.5 tanks. I like the coverage front to back I get with two. However, I ran one on the 10 for a long time with no issues. All my plants are low light.

Watch Craig's List for empty tanks for cheap.

Thanks this is helpful! I feel like I'll probably end up with 2 lights but I'm going to start with one.

I watched craigslist for like 3 years a couple years ago and only saw a tank on there once. Small town. However about 6 months ago this girl I went to school with posted on fb she was selling like 30 tanks, all them a dollar per gallon and she had like 4 20gL's! I wasn't planning on upgrading at ghat point so I didn't buy anything from her :/ kicking myself now lol. But petco does these sales like 4 times a year and I saw a thing predicting the next one to start Jan 2020 based off previous sales which isn't too far off, but I would end up only being out that way at the end of the sale again (based on predictions, the last day of the sale) so idk if I'll be able to snag a tank then either.

One caution about PetCo tanks: Only Aqueon products work so if you ever go with a glass canopy you *must* get an Aqueon.

I didn't realize this. I had Marineland tanks and when I had the 20 long and 10 gallon acrylic dividers made I used the Marineland dimensions. Imagine my surprise when I bought two PetCo Aqueon 20 longs and the dividers didn't fit. They are not off by much but instead of sitting flush front to back they have to be slightly angled. Doesn't bother me or three customers with Aqueon tanks who bought them. But I do tell everyone this fact up front.

Just keep that in mind if you buy a canopy in future.

BTW, I had a thought: I could paint the reptile screens white. Or, the actual screen part white and tape off the sides since I might want the black rim. I have used Krylon Fusion paint with no issues even with submerged equipment.

Thank you!! That's extremely helpful! Especially because the tank I have now, I got on a dollar per gallon sale at pet supplies in like 2013/2014. I have literally no idea what brand it is anymore. I feel like it's an Aqueon but I have no idea. So if I'm able to snag a tank I will for sure write it down or save the sticker or something cause no way in a few years will I remember what brand it is lol. I did actually save the sticker from the tank I have now for like 3 years but then went "this is dumb I'll never need to know what brand it is" and threw it away. Dummy me lol

Interesting about krylon not being a problem! I didn't know that. If I get the reptile lid I feel like I'd use krylon on it. I'm kinda torn about using eggcrate for a lid now.. the holes being big enough for me to just drop food in without even touching the lid is highly enticing and I already have the tool to cut it on hand. I also like how I could easily cut out a spot for the airline tube and heater cord. For the reptile screen I was just planning on having it set on top of the cord/airline.
