That pains me as well, that stupid black strip on the glass canopies drives me nuts as it blocks the light.
I tore the black strip off mine and just use the two individual pieces as the canopy. Take a dull knife and pry up the edge of the black strip. Be careful, don't crack the glass, I've always used a steel knife but I suppose a plastic one would work or better yet, if you have a trim install tool.
Once you get one edge up, try to pull the glass away, if it's stuck, slide the knife a little further down the black strip, you won't get too far before you're able to remove the glass.
Once you get the black strip off, the two pieces won't sit flush front to back against the top of the tank, but if you put them together and slide them forward, there will be a slight gap at the back but still covered by the plastic rim of the tank.
