Looks like tail biting. IME, difficult to stop.
Try getting him a bigger tank and give him fast moving tank mates - ones he could chase but not catch.

I was thinking that or the filter intake though that particular model I’ve used with other bettas without issue! My VT males seem super aggressive and both seeming to be tail biting!

I took out some of the things in question and he has even more tail missing! You suggested moving him to a bigger tank but what if he is biting because of the swim to the top and tail weight? I have larger tanks but they are occupied at the moment. Unless I split a tank but then I can’t do tank mates . I’m kinda nervous about bettas and mates but which ones do you suggest?

My experiences have been proven "different" - what was safe for me in a 13-50g tanks apparently could have been lethal. I suppose I have been lucky. So I dare not say which tank mates are safe.

Tank sizes have never been the cause of tail biting in my tānks. Mine began in 1g solitary bare tanks. And continued after moved to bigger tanks. Though I have only had very few tail biters, but I truly believe tank mates is the best option. . . . Just for comparison/consideration - I used female bettas, female guppies, and/or cardinals. But don't take my word for it because I've read people having problems with those tānk mates.
