Discoloration on Scales and Fins are Natural or Not?

I just got my new betta fish in a 10g tank and I haven't quite observed its appearance closely till today, he seems to have some discolorations on his body. I'm not quite sure if I should worry about him or not.

Also, can anyone tell me what type of fins he has? I'm quite confused and curious about his fin type. 🙂

He seems to have a marble gene and is changing colors.

Beautiful, does he get along well in the 10g with those beautiful long fins? I've only ever kept plakats in my 10g but my other adult boys are tail biters and a bit neurotic. Just curious!

He is actually alone in the tank, and he's doing great so far! How many plakats do you keep in your 10g? They're really pretty too, I'm considering on getting plakats for another tank because they're very adorable and they're less prone to fin rot 😍

I'll answer, too.

If you've seen my Betta you know that I like exaggerated fins. I have only had three or so that were uncomfortable in tanks over 2.5 gallons and, thus, fin bit. I have had them in everything from 2.5 to 100+ gallons over the years. I am firmly convinced strengthening their peduncle and fins has a lot to do with it....At least in my case(s).

I like PK, too. But they are not less prone to fin rot. They are, however, less likely to fin *bite* which many of our members mistakenly report as fin rot.

Fin rot is relatively rare and 99% caused by dirty environment and lack of habitat care. So make sure a Betta is not fin biting before medicating. My educational tip of the day.
