Betta Fish Care

Betta Fish Care

Bettas are one of the most popular fish kept. Unfortunately, many people see them kept in very tiny bowls in stores and assume that they require little to no care at home. However, that just isn't the case.

While people have reported success with different methods of keeping betta fish, the below represents a way that is regarded by many as a way to maximize your betta's health and well being.
  1. A History of Violence
  2. Betta Fish Habitat
  3. Betta Fish Maintenance

If you're the type that appreciates a list, this is what we recommend you have to ensure your betta fish's health. Explanations of each item's importance follow in the posts below.

  • A 2.5 gallon or larger aquarium*
  • A hood or glass cover
  • A light
  • A heater
  • A thermometer
  • A filter with low flow (optional)
  • Ornaments and/or plants
  • Water Conditioner
  • A test kit
  • Betta pellet food
  • Aquarium salt for treating potential illnesses
* Some fish keepers have success with containers smaller than 2.5 gallons. However, such containers require more maintenance, are difficult to heat properly, and do not allow much room for decorating or enriching the betta fish's environment. See the Betta Fish Habitat portion of this sticky for details.
