I have 2 bettas that I will be moving to a divided 20g that will be divided into 4-5 sections.
I wanted to use some media from another tank but that tank currently has some stressed fish in it. I'm not sure what the stress is from they're just pale and not growing their fins back. I have a thread about it in the diseases section. Should I not use that media?

I tend to use thicker DIY dividers and usually have filtration and a heater in every section to prevent changes in temperature and so on. Water can still pass through the dividers but not as easily as a 1 craft mesh thick divider.
I'd like to know how many fish are recommended for cycling the 20g. Will I need to move bits of media to each section? Should I wait to add fish until I've finished a fish-out cycle instead?
The only reason I want to do a fish-in is because the water changes for cycling the tank will be easier and probably safer and less stressful than the 2.5 and 3g the 2 fish are currently in.
The tank will have a lot a plants but won't be a NPT. Any advise on this situation for the fastest, safest cycle?
