I've got an aqua one nano 40 tank with 1 betta in, at the minute he has sand substrate and some fake plants + a piece of bogwood. I've got a T5 lighting system (3X 8W bulbs 10000K) and I've just ordered a beginner set of aquarium plants and liquid co2 + plant fertiliser + root tabs. I was wondering if I have missed anything that I need? and should I put my Betta into my emergency bowl while I add the plants and move the tank around?

Any advice about plants would be great, I've never had live plants before!
Here's a few pics of the tank and a link to the lighting: http://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/aquarium-1/aquarium-lighting/aquarium-t5-lighting/t5-small-aquarium-sump-refugum-lighting-24w.html

I would like to share some of my 25 years doing aquaculture with you.

Each tank is going to be different even if the setup is identical. A tank is a living thing from the water to the rocks, everything is connected within the glass box. Go slowly and take your time. Great tanks are not put together they are grown, your bacteria are your tank. The bacteria are EVERYTHING! It sounds like your moving real fast and what happens to things when they go fast? They go out of controll and crash. Try a minimalist approach and get the stuff as it's needed and or required. You can get great results using half that equipment and your wallet will feel better too.

The 10k bulbs are more for coral than plants they will "work" but not be ideal the ideal kelvin for plants is 6500k, the rest as far as like ferts I use PPS-pro ferts it is a daily micro and macro, the reason for daily is so the plants use it all up daily so there is none left over for algae to take hold. The liquid co2 I will assume you are either talking api co2 boost or seachems florish excel, my adive on this one is first off check into metricide/omnicide it is basically the same thing as thos but a bit stronger and way way way cheaper, I use it in all of my tanks to combat algae and give the plants the carbon they need to grow fast, ton of people will say get a pressurized co2 system and save even more, but I do not want to accidentally gas and kill my fish I have 100's of dollars invested in them. Ok lighting is always a matter of photoperiod and like forrestfire says above all tanks are diffrent, you have to find a balance between lights ferts co2/liquid co2 or you will have algae isuues, believe me I had one tough fight with BBA in my 46 gallon I will say if you basically double dose the liquid co2 products and have your photoperiod not too long it will be fine, I could go into all the issues you might/could/will have but it would take hours to guess, so you will have some learning to do and figure out what works for your tank and of course you can always come back and ask questions as thing happen, and yes I would take the fish out while doing major work in the tank.

algae

Have you tryed oto's for your algae issues? I've always used them with live shrimp to cut back on the green. The first thing I do is cut diet and add water changes then I shorten the photo period. Cuts the slime every time.

Sorry about the late reply, I didn't get an email notifications! thanks for all your advice, I didn't know about the lighting so if it doesn't go well I get a different system or bulbs. The tank is planted now but is still a bit messy! hoping it all goes well! haha and I've included a pic of it now and a pic of the fertilizer and co2 I'm using :)

and on the oto's, I was planning on getting a few as they should be okay with my betta and help clean up any mess! I will probably wait until the tank has settled down again in a week or so before getting a few :)

Thanks everyone
