I got my betta Aether around a month ago. Everything has been good, and he’s even grown back most of his dorsal fins that got ripped in the pet store.
But now he has a scale that is sticking up near his dorsal fin. It’s just one, and he’s not showing any other signs of sickness. He’s just as energetic, is eating just as much, and is overall normal.
The top 4 photos show the scale sticking up, and the bottom 2 show the light pink skin under it.
Could this just be a little injury? Could it be sickness? Or am I just overreacting?

It looks like an injury to me but I am not 100% certain. That being said, if it is an injury it can easily become infected if the water levels are too high. 1ppm ammonia is much too high and we like to see nitrate levels between 5-20. If it were mine I would do 4 25% water changes 4 hours apart to avoid shock. You can get some indian almond leaf for the tank to help with healing. Are there sharp bits on his plants or décor?
Thank you, I’ll do the water changes, and I’ve made sure there are no sharp bits anywhere in his tank. I’ve used the leaves before, but they made the tank water so cloudy, and actually caused an ammonia spike. I think that’s why it’s so high right now.
