Almond leaves or blackwater extract?

I got myself some IAL leaves and put them in my breeder and stock tanks two weeks ago. Some seem to put off tannins while others don't. Is it better to make extract from the leaves, or does it matter that the leaves are not releasing tannins?

If you make extract, how long will it last? Can you make extract ice cubs and preserve it that way or will it degrade the affect? Lots of questions I know..

Or am I wasting my time and should be using something else?

I definitely prefer the whole leaves, especially in any tank fry will be in. Breeding fish also like to utilize it to nest, I find. They promote the growth of microorganisms and provide shelter for fry.

The extract will give you more consistent results, but you do lose a few benefits. Up to you, really, either is better than nothing.
