I'm not sure if this is an injury/emergency or not but this post can be removed or moved if it should not be in this part of the forum by a moderator.
One of my baby bettas, Peony, has what looks like a bump or some sort of marking on her head. It's an x-mark within a triangle-shaped area that is slightly paler than the rest of her head. I thought it could be her veins or something showing since I vaguely see the same x-shaped marking within a triangle on my other two white baby females' heads, but it's not nearly so obvious and dark. Any ideas??
Housing
What size is your tank?: A divided 5-gallon tank, where she has 1.25 gallons of her own space and water flow through the mesh.
What temperature is your tank?: 82° Fahrenheit
Does your tank have a filter?: Yes (Sponge)
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration?: An air stone
Is your tank heated?: Yes
What tank mates does your betta fish live with?: She shares a divided 5-gallon with 3 other baby bettas. There are no tank mates in her divided section of the tank.
Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish?: I used to feed her flakes. As of a few days ago I've started feeding her Frozen Brine Shrimp and sometimes Hikari Tropical Micro Pellets (my mom said they were recommended for betta babies).
How often do you feed your betta fish?: I used to feed her about once daily. Now I feed her about 3x daily as of a couple of days ago.
Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change?: Once weekly or so.
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change?: ⅓ -½%.
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change?: Aqueon Water Conditioner, Indian Almond Leaves, API Aquarium Salt.
Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?: I tested them today with test strips and an ammonia test kit. It's hard to determine the Hardness and Alkalinity from the strips so please forgive the uncertainty.
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 20
pH: 7.8
Hardness: likely 75?, possibly 150
Alkalinity: likely 120?, possibly 40
Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed?: Her scales were darker when I first adopted her, but I did not notice that this marking until recently. I've been told the coloration change is normal.
How has your betta fish's behavior changed?: Not at all. Very active and fishy. She's aggressive to other baby bettas when in the same shared space and likewise, but I didn't notice any injuries.
When did you start noticing the symptoms?: I noticed the mark a couple of days ago.
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how?: Indian Almond Leaves in the water and Freshwater Aquarium Salt.
Does your fish have any history of being ill?: Not that I'm aware of.
How old is your fish (approximately)?: From the looks of the chart I reference, Peony appears to be 5 weeks old. Considering that she hasn't grown in 7 weeks, she's at least 12 weeks old.
Photos Provided (taken as of today). . .
PeonyBump1-5: Images of the marking on the direct center of her head. The triangle shape is slightly paler than the rest of her, and the marking is a deep vivid red.
OpalHead: The photos may not show it as well if at all, but I can vaguely see the same marking on my two white females. It's worth noting the difference in how difficult it is to see on Opal compared to Peony.
PeonySide: Some angles, in case that helps somehow.
PeonyThen&Now: The darker colored versions are Peony the day after I adopted her. The lighter-colored photos were taken today.
