A sponge filter is probably your absolute safest filter for that size. There's no way to get sucked in - though I have never had a fish get sucked into a filter.
Best Filter for a large Kritter Keeper?
My MI has been really acting up and kicking me in the rear after Gaia died, and now I'm having trouble trying to keep up with water changes for Veruna. Filters scare me, to be honest. I hear so many horror stories about bettas swimming or getting sucked in.
What's the best, safest filter for a large Kritter Keeper? That's about 4.5 gallons ftr.

A sponge filter is the safest bet, you will need an air pump to run it of course.
However that does not rule out a HOB filter. If you want to go that route check out an Aquaclear 20. They are exceptional filters. if you put a prefilter on the uptake strainer you essentially turn it into a very efficent sponge filter, and your betta will not be injured by the strainer.
Being that the the Kritter Keepers have very thin walls you will need to cut a piece of styrofoam to place between the filter and the wall of the tank to give the filter support. I have done this on thin wall tanks and it works fine. The styrofoam actually quiets some of the noise from the filter as well.
Also keep in mind that while filters are great, and you can achieve a cycled tank, you will still need to do water changes on a regular basis....just not full water changes.

Sponge or use a azoo palm filter on drsfostersmith.com for 6.99 they r for 4 gal or less i have 2 luv them

I use a Whisper10 to power my sponge filters in my 10 gallon tanks and I'm very happy with it. I'm Pretty sure you will able to use it in 2 KKs. You will need a "T" and a check valve.
