Hi everybody! Newbie in the here

I've been Google-ing around looking for solutions but I'm unsure. Today when I fed my fish I realize his mouth looks a little...weird? Like if it's swollen or something. He is happy and dances around when I'm nearby, so it doesn't look like he's suffering but I don't want to ignore it.

I heard that salt helps it but on the other hand salt can be dangerous for fish without scales? He's scaleless on his head. Also, I have a snail. Some say that salt doesn't affect snails other say it does. I'm going for the latter.

Any idea on how to cure it? I have a 5 gallon tank, one plant, one decoration, one snail, a filter, and one betta The water temp is 78 atm. Thank you in advance! ^_^

his mouth isn't swollen, at all. Its just how a betta's mouth is.

agree with Vivan mouth does not look swollen at all to me either.

Side note: In a 5 gallon tank for a betta, I would add ALOT more plants. Bettas like dark covered places. You can leave a little room to swim but a rule of thumb is to have enough plants to where sometimes you cannot find him.

Also with a temp of 78 is it constant? Do you have a heater? A heater is very necessary for a betta unless you live in a tropical climate.

Hi everyone, thank you for your replies. Maybe I was overreacting, but I Could've sworn that his mouth was a little different from before.

As for the temperature, for now the weather over here is pleasant to keep a standard 78-80 degree water temperature but I do have a heater for when the weather drops.
And I'll look into getting more plants/cave. Right now I have an Amazon sword who is steadily growing.

Just a note about heaters and betta. Betta are tropical fish that can be sensitive to temperature changes. A heater not only warms the water but it prevents temperature fluctuations by maintaining stable conditions. If the temperature fluctuates it causes stress, and in turn stress causes their immune systems to lower leaving them susceptible to illness and disease. I normally keep my betta tank at roughly 83F to 84F.
