My betta, Javert, is recovering from ammonia poisoning. I found out I was using a conditioner that didn't neutralize ammonia, but I've switched over to one that does. Javert was getting his color back and wasn't clamping his fins so much, but he won't eat. He swims up to his food, was it, and then spits it out. He attempts to eat it about five times and then gives up like he's depressed. It's been three days since he's eaten. Any thoughts on what's going on?

How long you had him? I've had him six months, but I believe he's three years old. I got him from someone else.
How big is the tank? It's a half gallon. I know it's small, and I intend to get something bigger, but currently can't afford anything more.
How often and how much% you change the water? I've been off this week because of some bowl changes, but basically 25% daily with a full change once a week.
Do you cycle the tank or not? No.
Do you have a filter? Yes.
What are the other symptoms he has? He's been lethargic and clamping a lot.
Any visual symptoms on the body? His gills looked burned last week, but they appear to have healed.
Behavior symptoms? Sometimes after I try to feed him he opens his mouth really wide as if he's yawning.
Is he lethargic? Yes.
Is he bloated? Not that I can tell.
If he is bloated did you see the poop? I haven't seen him poop.
Is his poo white, clear, stringy, wormy shape? Not that I've noticed.
Do you know if your tap water has ammonia in it? It does.
What kind/brand of water conditioner are you using? Seachem prime.

What brand of food are you feeding him?
Pellets or flakes?
How much do you give him each time?

If you're using pellets, use a fingernail to chop the pellet in half. Try feeding him one of these small pieces.

If you live someplace that has mosquitoes, look for mosquito larvae. Sometimes, you can find these in wet places, like under pots for outdoor plants. If you find some, rinse them in a bit of tank water, then feed them to him. They're soft, easily digestible, and will provide good nutrition for him.

missmacykate - where did you get the package?

betafishie - on this forum, the two most often recommended pellets are: New Life Spectrum Betta pellets, and Omega One Betta Buffet pellets. If you prefer flakes, Omega One makes those, too. Mosquito larvae are better for them than peas are....

The pellets came from the friend who gave me the fish. It looked like she tore off the part of the wrapper that had the name on it. However, the box they're in is made of plastic and shaped like a fish. I don't know if that's helpful at all, but I've never seen a box shaped like a fish in the store. It's got a lot of food in it, so I don't think it's food that came with their bowl or anything.
