I think he might be spitting it out but he is loving it lol. He loves my sword plant and nips at it.Are you sure he is actually EATING the sand? Or is he just picking them up and popping them back out?
Other wise, I think he is just getting used to the new substrate. Different feel n such.
I think my Spike prefers his sand over gravel. Ever since I switched he has made little beds and likes to lay in them.
There is something gray on the surface of mine and he loves picking it.could be something living in/on there. Mine used to pick at their sand constantly.
How long did you rinse the sand? There is something gray on the surface of mine and he loves picking it.
I rinsed it until the water ran clear. I am cleaning it today so hopefully it gets suctioned upHow long did you rinse the sand?
I touched it and its just gray sand that was mixed in with the whiteWhat do you mean, something gray?
With sand, be sure to poke it with a stick and stir it once a week. Otherwise, it will go bad. Very bad.

I've heard that the sand can harbor gas pockets and they may explode killing your fish.what do you mean by very bad?
I will buy new sand tomorrowWas it always gray? I am afraid your sand may have gone bad. I had white sand and I didn't know that I was supposed to stir it and it started to turn gray. When I finally did stir it, it released a horrible smell and 3 of my cory cats died. My advice is if you can, replace the sand and then be sure to stir it once a week.
What happens when you don't stir sand is it develops these little pockets of toxic gas that make the sand go bad and the gas can kill.
You don't have to buy new sand, just clean the one you have now to flush out the toxic stuff in it. wash it in bleach and rinse it over and over again, and soak in a container for a few days.I will buy new sand tomorrow
