betta suddenly scared???

I have had my betta for roughly a month now, he is usually really playful and always hungry. I have gotten to know a lot of his signs for stress. Which includes changing colors to off white and swims around in a frantic sometimes running into container walls.-- This week we went to house set for my parents and we toke our betta with us but now he is white and hiding in his little pineapple home. I have changed 50% of his water since then and I have to pull his pineapple out to get him to swim...sometimes he comes out on his own to eat....im worried:cry:

Did you use water from your parents place to fill his tank? Did you acclimate him to it? Their water may be different from yours. You did not forget to add the water conditioner? Is your tank filtered/cycled, you may also want to test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, pH could be important too.

To keep stress low you could place a towel over his tank, it will help him stay calm. If he is hiding in his pineapple house, I would not disturb him, I imagine that this would only add to his stress.

I'm sure with a stretch of quiet time he will come around and be his old self again.
he isn't flitered at the moment we been buying things slowly ...and we used parents water but brought him in his own water( a little cup about 6 oz)..... I added the conditioner after I emptied his tank for travel.... I was going to change his water again cause its a little merky...
I agree, if he's stressed, it could be the change in water conditions. Removing his hiding places will only make it worse. If he is so stressed that he isn't swimming, than taking out his only line of defense is really going to stress him out.
I went to the store and got him some fake planets to put in his tank. He came out to see what I was doing. First time I seen him out in almost 2 days. :) He has been out of his pineapple ever since I put the planets in the tank. He still isn't eating as much, but that might be a due to a accidental sudden change in brand of dried blood worms.
That's a good sign that he is coming out again on his own. Do you soak his dried bloodworms before feeding them to him? How often do you give him bloodworms, and does he get any other foods as well?

Do you have the ability to measure the ammonia concentration of your water? In a small unfiltered tank, ammonia can buildup quickly. Part of his behavior is probably linked to high ammonia levels in the tank.

Did his behavior start after a water change? There may be an issue there as well. Some people have ammonia in their source water, and if he was jumping out of his skin after a water change, there may be an issue.
I soaked the bloodworms for like 1.5 to 2 minutes.... ( amount of time for me to go to the bathroom before and after sleeping) I gave them to him when I wake up in the morning and at night before I go to bed...I give him 3 pieces of blood worms......I was giving him brine shrimp in the morning before my daughter thought It would be funny to get pay back by putting his food in the toilet...
and I don't have ammonia tester yet...I was going to go get one after we got paid this week for mowing.... I would change his water once a week... do a 50% change in the middle of the week and about 3 times I day I would take about 3 cups of water out and add 3 new cups a day.(to regulate the tempt)
No worries. You can reasonably control ammonia levels with the water changes you are doing.

I've included a link to a guide to water changes in an unfiltered tank. Many people use this guide successfully. It will help keep your betta's water reasonably safe for him.

Hope this helps
thank you... we was talking about next month getting him a brand new tank..... he is currently in what I believe to be a 2 gallon or 2.5 gal....so old I don't remember...and it has a very slow leak that I fear will become worse.... do you guys have any ideas? my hubbys doesn't want any that's 5 gal or larger... any suggestion?... if I can keep it in the 20-25 dollar range I can talk him into it......
here is a link to the tanks I was looking at... this is a 3.5 gal, and only 2+ bucks more then the 2.5 gal at walmart....im worried about the filter and the lighting...will it be enough as a heater. http://www.petsmart.com/fish/aquari..._id=36-17638&_t=pfm=category&pfmvalue=faceted..........
I am not familiar with this tank, but whenever I am considering a purchase I try to find as many reviews as I can. Read the negative ones as well as the positive. Just click on the reviews bar of the site you provided.
