Better fish vs. Ghost Shrimp

While my Betta fish heals up, I thought I'd put my energy into something more positive instead of all the worry I was doing while my tank was cycling.

I tried to upload it it but the attachments feature kept giving me an error.

So here it is :)

Well.. your betta looks adamant on getting the shrimps! lol. Please let me know if they are still around after a week. :p
That's a very cute video! Just wondering, I have the same heater and wasn't sure if it was fully submersible. Have you ever had an issue with it?
Soriel: He hasn't attacked them too much so far save for the littlest one (The Brain). But I just woke up this morning to find his shell and he was molting! So he's less sluggish now and we'll see what happens. I take it you have bettas that devour ghost shrimp? :)

hannat: Thanks! I used iMovie which is really, really easy to use. I haven't used Windows in a while but their movie maker was pretty user friendly too. And it's free! Been feeling guilty about having him in a hospital tank so it was cathartic to make it. The heater has given me no problems whatsoever. So far so good but I actually do keep an eye on it to make sure it works. I'm in San Francisco so it doesn't get toooo cold here. Do you have a video of your betta(s)?
How big is your tank and how many shrimp do you have in there? I'm interested in possibly getting some friends for my betta in the future!
I have three shrimp and a betta in a 3 gallon! A month and a half ago I was an ignorant fish keeper who thought a 1 gallon was totally sufficient for fish. I joined a few forums the afternoon that I bought my bettas (yep, plural) and bettafish.com blew my preconceptions about fish right out of the water. I'm glad that it did. I returned that tank and bought a 3-gallon which began my cycling experience.

Now...well, now I want a 5 gallon. The 3 gallon seems too small for him. I see this happening a lot here on the forums :)

As for friends - I'm not the person to ask since I'm such a newbie but I read a lot about ghost/cherry shrimp and bettas. I can't really add anything else right now since my tank is so small.

You don't really know how your betta is going to react to shrimp. I've seen a lot of bullying videos and other threads where bettas attack/kill them. So far, mine only bullys (like the video) and he only bullys the smallest one. A few times, he's tried to bite/nip at the smallest so time will tell if they can co-exist.

I've read they don't have too much of a bio-load and being that they are bottom-feeders, they eat detritus off of the aquarium floor.
I'd go for it! They are so entertaining and are studious in their work "cleaning up" matter. I hope it works out for you, whatever you decide on. I'd love an update when you do get your little buddies for your betta!

Was that music in the background right at the end from Ranma 1/2??
Got me all excited thinking I found another Ranma fan lol.

Ahh, no. But I have watched a good handful of anime movies in the past but they are probably all outdated by now. Totally different from Manga me thinks.

Btw Mousie, do you know if we're allowed to post Youtube links here on bettafish.com? Is that frowned upon?

You can. As long as there's no fighting/killing involved and it's on topic. Should be fine. I'm not entirely sure what the consensus is on vids showing live food feeding. Most of the forums I'm a part of do not allow it.
I also wanted to keep some shrimps with my betta, but when I went to the LFS, and asked for Ghost Shrimp, the uncle passed me a bag with at least 50 shrimps inside. LOL.

I said "But i only want 2-3 shrimps"

he said "What for? These shrimps are meant as fish food!"

I said "I want to keep them as friends for my betta",

and he gave me a funny look. :-? Guess they only sell the expensive colorful shrimps in small qty.
That is Hilarious. I really, really enjoy these stories about other aquarist's experiences. It really brings a smile to my face. He didn't ask for what they were for? On the other hand, I did watch this video where a guy was feeding his eels and rays 100 ghost shrimp!!! So I might understand why he did that :)

At one of my LFS, 6th Ave Aquarium, it's actually do it yourself! I don't know if this is normal and when I asked for three ghost shrimp (they are 3 for $1) the shop owner pointed me to these small, clear acrylic buckets (1/2 gallon?) hanging on the wall where each contains their own fish nets. I proceeded to the shrimp aquarium in the back and fished out three ghost shrimp. It was fun!

Sidenote: I wanted to get shrimp that were not lethargic. There's no science behind that ha, it's just I saw a Youtube video where a guy said his shrimp would squirt away too quickly for his betta. My betta has tried to nip at them too but they literally shoot away really fast before he can do any damage. Time will tell, but I think if Hicks had an opportunity, he would bite them.

I'm picking up a five gallon and new filter this weekend, so, once again, my betta will have a new home. But I can't wait. My tank is so weasle-y looking right now. Meh.

Btw, hannat, I turned my heater right side up after you asked because, who knows, it might be safer that way? The directions say that it is a water tight seal but no point in pushin' your luck :)

The nob at the top is now out of the water. For those that may be curious, it was sideways, completely submerged, for about 5 weeks (without Hicks in the tank) and it showed no signs of malfunctioning.
