Brown algae problem

507 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  shellieca
Help me out, guys. What's the best way to deal with the brown algae that is growing over my gravel and decor? I understand that there are some critters highly adept at eat algae, but I'm not sure if my tank can accommodate another creature. Need an expert opinion.

Tank details: 5 gallon, heated, filtered, cycled. 20% weekly water change.
Tankmates: one betta, 4 ghost shrimp and several live plants.

Have you adjusted the amount of time your lights are on? Is the tank near a window where it gets indirect sunlight? How long has the tank been cycled?
The lights are on about 10 hours per day. The tank has been cycles for 3 months. It gets a little bit of indirect sunlight, hardly any.
I would cut the lights back to 8 hrs and see if that helps and if need be back to 7.
