Chain Store RESCUE!

I'm fairly new to the betta world and I'm already in love. I'm also horrified by how betta bowls are mass marketed to unsuspecting parents (I was one and quickly rectified the situation: I have 4 bettas; 2 in 5 gallon heated tanks and 2 in 10 gallon heated tanks). I felt the uncontrollable urge to rescue the saddest looking betta I could find at our local ginormous store. I picked this little guy below and, in honor of today's D-Day anniversary, I named him "Omaha." I set up a quarantine/hospital tank and heated it so I could give Omaha a 10 day aquarium salt treatment. It's possible I'll just be easing him into the ever-after a little more gently than the store would have, but I'm hopeful. Please look at him and let me know what you think. It looks like he has fin rot for sure; also, the black smudges on him? Is that pigment or from the ammonia build-up? Thanks for your input!

I have one similar to that with black smudges. When he fully colored up, his scales were lined in black on the front half of his body. All of mine that had bad ammonia wound up with bright red scarring on the top of their heads and on their gills. I'm seeing a little on his head so it looks like you got to him before he burned badly. He's a pretty boy! And yeah, i've been there on the chain store rescue before. Clean, warm water does wonders! Someone else may be able to tell you if they see fin rot as I've never dealt with that.
Do not worry about being crazy. If you like to rescue bettas you are like us all here! I want to recue one but my inexperiency has shown me to get a healthy one from my LPS/LFS first.

Thanks! I'm really excited to see what he'll look like when he's healthy. I'm glad to know I may have saved him before he was too scarred up. I'll update the thread with a picture after the 10 day treatment.

Thanks FW! I stumbled into unhealthy betta fish by complete accident. The bettas I bought from my LPS looked good to me at the time. Little did I know what a sick betta actually looked like! Then it hit me: I'd only ever seen bettas at the big chain stores. No wonder I thought that's what all bettas looked like!
My second betta had bad SBD when we got him. And some ammonia burning on his head and gills. He's my problem betta! :) He freaked my out one week as he is all turquoise and his fins started going red!
My last betta was my only intentional rescue. He had bad burning all along his head, and most of the way down his back. He was a horrid grey when we got him, but then he turned purpley/blueish with red and blue on his fins! He is a stunning boy! It is amazing what betta fish can survive and what they can bounce back from!
Please post pics when you've had him a couple weeks so we can all see what a pretty boy he is!
