Clay Fertilizer Balls

Does anyone know anything about these? I was thinking of putting them under my sand substrate since they seem like theyd be easier to separate from it, i dont know how much of a mess they make and i kind of want to keep my sand looking clean. Also, should I use a fertilizer water additive along with them? I would also appreciate some tips on this subject. Thank you!

It sounds like commercially sold ones tend to be missing some nutrients. You can make your own, and there's debate about using red clay vs grey...
