So i am cleaning my dads old 14gallon tank. As i said it is very old (around 20years) and is very dirty becaise its been sitting in a shed for a long time amd is stockpiled with dirt.
Can i use bleach to clean it though i know your not meant to but i dont think i can get it properly cleaned without it.
All help is appreciated, thanks :)
(sorry about the grammer im in a hurry)

Just dilute the bleach with tap water, clean it, and rinse it REALLY good. After you use bleach you will want to use a double dose of water treatment when adding your water for the first time to the tank. Another alternative to bleach that is safer is vinegar. I personally would try the vinegar before using bleach.

In the future, it might help to stock some white vinegar. Its cheap and cleans really well if used properly. Also, in case you ever get a sick fish and need to quarantine, its a good idea to thoroughly clean the medical tank with hot water and vinegar too.

Yay! I used white vinegar to clean out an old tank, too. Worked great. :) If you haven't already, you might want to check it for leaks since it's been sitting for so long. Fill it up with some water and leave it somewhere (bathtub, back porch) for a few days. It'd suck if you got it all set up and it started leaking. X_X

So how do you use it? Soak the decoration in a mixture of water and vinegar,,, soak how long and just rinse well?. Thanks

I just scrub with it until it's clean. :) If you have especially harsh scum, you can use aquarium, sea, or epsom salt as an abrasive while scrubbing. And, of course, rinse well.
