Last night I took out the filter that had come with my 36 gallon tank and replaced it with a Fluval Aquaclear 50. In order to keep the cycle going in my tank I just rinsed the old filter media in tank water and then placed in at the bottom of the tank. Today, when I got home from work I checked on the tank and the water is all cloudy.

Did I do something wrong, and is there any way to clear up the water?

Cloudiness is generally an bacteria bloom in a healthy tank and nothing to worry about, it should go away on its own either tonight or tomorrow.

You did the right thing by putting in the old media to seed the tank. It would be even better if you could put the old filter media into the new filter.

Laki's right. The cloudiness should quickly go away.

You were right, the water is now clearer than it has ever been! And the reason I didn't put the old media into the new filter is because it didn't fit in it, it will have to stay that way for now :lol:
