Hello, I'm new here and this is my first post.

I have had my boy Samurai for about 8 months now and every since I had him I had been going back an forth with aggressive fin rot and every now and then I would notice small little fuzzies near the top of his head, but they would eventually go away with water changes and salt. I originally had him in my 10 gal tank with plastic plants and took those out due to scratches on his side and replaced them with silk plants. I had been very recently battling his fin rot to the point there was some growth on his fins, which I was very happy about. Then suddenly he developed a pinhole in his dorsal fin which left me worried a bit but they were happening anyway and with water changes an aquarium salt they went away. This particular pinhole was between the end of his dorsal fin and his body which worried me a bit because I knew it could lead to body rot as his fins where becoming ever more closer to his body.

I was using Triple Sulfa for the rot, I used Mardel Maracyn 2, Clean water, Salt, Almond leaves, Fungus Guard with Kanaplex, now just Kanaplex with the Almond leaf and although now I'm seeing some regrowth
on his fins. The Columnaris which he has had now for about a week is steady progressing downward from is dorsal fin which is creating a saddleback lesion is spreading and not improving.

Weird part of it all is. He's happy... He swims normally, he's curious about things...like his poop.lol. or the shinny marble in his tank. He swims in and out of his cave. He gets so excited about food when I come and sit near the tank and stares at the food in my hand as he swims like mad waiting for me to drop a pellet down and he has started making bubble nests again.

I'm baffled by this...Yet I wake up scared to take the cover off his tank and see that he's dead.

My question here is. Should I take him out of his tank as I don't really see him progressing in it as I have notice each time I do a water change there are these weird particles that look like dust in his tank? The parameters are always great as I keep up well with his tank. I do water changes two to three times a week in his 10 gallon tank.

I have a 1 gallon plastic container that you get with the lid and I got that from Walmart I used to treat sick fish with. I have already bleached and washed it out numerous times and I was wondering if I should continue his treatments with AQ salt, Kanaplex and a Almond leaf in the 1 gallon tank.

My parameters for my Betta tank is:
Tank: 10 gallons
Heated: yes
Filter: Yes Whisper
Plants/Decorations: Silk plants, rocks and Waterfall cave
Nitrates 0
Nitrites 0
Ph: between 6.8 and 7.0
Ammonia:0

I feed my betta
aqueon betta pellets
New life Spectrum Thera A pellets
Not very often Brine Shrimp
Tetra Betta Flakes

If anyone has ideas about what I can do about setting up a Hospital tank for my Betta I would greatly appreciate it.

He's very sick. I don't want to lose him.

Hi there,
I'm wondering if he just is a marble Betta, and what you're seeing is him changing colours. I've found this older thread where you can see some pictures of the betta's bodies looking similar to the one of your betta.

Maybe you could give it a try keeping your betta just in some clean warm water without any meds or salts since he does not act sick at all. Maybe those little holes will heal up on their own without needing any treatment.

I don't know though for sure and hope some of the more experienced members can advice!

Good luck,
Netti

Thank you for your response. I thought too that he was just changing color but when I brought him he was Lavender color and the triangle discoloration seems to be getting worse. I've seen other pictures of Columnaris and their bettas had that same saddle back appearance. I change his water yesterday and will change his water tomorrow as I tested his water before the change yesterday and the ammonia was a little high. I think it ran high because of the Kanaplex but I haven't really read that it effects the good bacteria in some way.

Right now he's in clean water with two almond leaves. I just ordered some Furan-2 and will start treating with both to see if clears it up. If it doesn't clear up, as these are the best medications for columnaris than I will chalk it up to color change and monitor him.

I did notice some white particles in my tank and ruled out hydra. I have know idea.

Yes! Netti is right! He's just changing color! I find that they generally start like your boy and his colors will just expand!

Here's another Marble: http://www.bettafish.com/showthread.php?t=387474

Thank you for the pictures..That's how he looks. This looks like it could be just a color change as he looks like that. I do wonder if they change colors during the changing seasons. It's May and getting pretty warm out in Virginia. This would be great if it's just that and not some awful bacteria infection.

Hmmm

The white particles in your tank could have been anything from planaria, some dead bacteria floating around, to just plain aquarium 'dust' basically the non-dissolved organic compounds will float around if stirred up from the substrate.

Don't treat if you don't have to, if it were Columnaris he'd have fuzz on him not just the saddle back portion. Why treat and stress him out when you don't have to? Wasting medication but also putting stress on his liver and kidney's that could potentially hurt him in the long run.

After reading your first post and seeing for myself that this looks indeed like he has marbling going onI stop treating him for Columnaris and I'm back on growing his fins back....Funny, I'm reading a post that your stated Vita-chem is good for regrowth. I just have been scouring the web looking at different treatments for that as I thought the Columnaris might have been causing the fin rot.

Now I'm just enjoying watching him turn colors. It is extremely exciting. I'm taking pictures of the progress. I may post some. I hope this thread helps somebody out. As I've seen plenty of people panicking about this phenomenon.

Thank you again and my Betta thanks you as well. :-D

Yeah, Vita-Chem does help! It doesn't directly give them energy but it helps them process the proteins, carbs and lipids INTO energy which can help them focus on regrowing their fins ^_^

I hope you can post the pictures! I would love to see him!!
