Hi everyone, I’ve tried to post elsewhere but wasn’t much help.

two things, first is the white spot on his belly, it has been there for a while now, and secondly in the last 2 days he has developed a black patch on top of his head, are these things something serious or normal?

He has had it for a while now.
5gal tank
80 degree temp
Has filter, changed every two weeks
The nitrite was 5.0 a week ago, brought it down to .25 still trying to get it to 0 with prime.
I do water changes once a week 25-40%, had the fish for about 3 months, was in a fish bowl for 2 weeks but wasn’t doing well in it so I got a tank. No tankmates, feed him 2 times a day, was 10 pellets twice a day, now 2-4 pellets twice a day, sometimes mysis, daphnia, bloodworms. recently received my test kit I ordered over a month ago, so I don’t know how long the nitrites were there for.

Have you owned him for three or six months?

He looks to be on the thinner side. Hikari/Kyorin is not a very nutritious food as it contains mostly fillers. If you are also feeding NorthFin Betta Bits use that and throw out the Hikari. Dial-a-Treats only once or twice a week but not as a meal substitute.

Stop changing out the filter as you are throwing away the nitrifying bacteria which keeps the water safe. Now that you have a test kit, follow the Forum's tutorial CYCLING: the two-sentence tutorial Instead of throwing out the media, swish and squeeze out in old tank water or fresh, conditioned water.

Is the black spot raised or smooth? Can you post a side view as a thumbnail? The second photo is too blurry to tell anything about his belly. Do you have a side photo of him from when you brought him home? Can you mimic that photo so we can see the change?

Just to be safe, floating or making a tea out of Indian Almond Leaves or plain Rooibos Tea is a good idea. Both have antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Thank you for filling out the form. I'm sure the reason you haven't received any replies is people didn't see it because it was in a quote. I moved so it is more visible.

I’ve owned him for 6 months now.

Got rid of the hikiri one and using the North fin brand, what would be the best pellets to get for him in your opinion, I’ll grab that.

as for the black spot, it’s going away, but now it’s a lighter blue colour in its place. See the attached photo. It looks pretty flat as well as the side.

the first photo attached is when he was new.
the rest I tried to take better photos, hope it works out.

Thank you for your help, much appreciated!

I noticed this morning he has black spots on his fin as well, could it be fin rot?

I like NorthFin Betta Bits and used them until I switched to a brand that isn't sold in Canada. It's made by a small company but I'm pretty sure it would be prohibitive to ship to Canada. It is Bug (Black Soldier Fly Larvae) Grain Free Crumbles

I'll be more than happy to ask the owner the cost to send to Canada.

The black spots are normal and nothing to worry about. They are part of his pattern.

he doesn’t seem to like the North fin pellets, he had issues with them before, but no problem eating other food.

Today I noticed he is a little more sluggish, doesn’t move as much as he used to, he’s still moving a decent amount, but not as much, he’s also spending more time in the bottom half of the tank as well. I added some dark water, the almond leaf extract today, hopefully that helps.

it’s okay but thank you for the offer, I’ll try to find some other pellets I can order online, I’ll do research first.

Good to know that those black dots aren’t anything to worry about, seems like issue after issue lately…

They're called "Wild Spots." :)

Fluval Bug Bites are good. New Life Spectrum or Aqueon Color Enhancing or Betta Formula are also good. I've used all at one time or another.
good to know! Glad to dodge that bullet.

i read the reviews for new life spectrum, it usually says the pellets are too big, is that the case? I don’t want to risk ordering it then it’s too big for him.
And happy to say that the parameters in the tank are now ammonia-0 nitrite-0 nitrate -0 and PH at 7.2, hopefully he will improve soon
