Im considering making my own hideouts for my bettas as ornaments in stores are so pricey, and I love working with clay! Does anyone happen to know if shellac is aquarium safe? (i know it is safe in general, ive used it to seal hides for my ball python). Or can you guys recommend a good sealant that is safe?

I have no idea but...on aquabid, there is a potter, Rosenthal, who would know. He might have a website...you could try and look him up under: rosenthalpottery. Or ask question through email from aquabid.

Many pet stores sell aquarium-safe silicone. I use that to glue together little rock caves for my boys. It would look pretty bad on the outside of pottery, but I bet it could be used to seal it.

ooh thats an idea, how well does that stuff spread?

Eh... Not very well. I had a lot of trouble with the stuff just trying to spread it on the glass to glue in my dividers. Once it comes out of the tube you only have a little time to work with it until it gets really messy.
