Do bettas need a heater?

I know that the ideal temperature for them is between 76-80 or so degrees, but that anything above 70 should be okay. My current room temperature in the middle of the day is 72, but I'm quite sure that it dips down quite a bit (perhaps into the high 60's) during the night. Is a heater necessary for my tank?

At those temperatures and with the fluctuations that not having a heater will cause, your betta is going to get stressed and most likely sick.

A heater is intended to keep a stable temperature, and your tank is much too cold to go without.

+1 to shellieca.

It's really important, too, that the temperature of the tank be stable. Drastic changes in temp are stressful for bettas, and that can cause them to get sick easier.

Basically, yes, a heater is necessary!

Make sure you get an adjustable one with a thermostat, so that you can set the temperature.

The pre-set ones that are often advertised for bettas (those that heat up to certain degrees above room temperature) usually don't hold the correct temperature, or keep it stable.

I've had my betta for almost five months and never had a heater. Though I live in a small apartment and it's a small three gallon tank. He's been thriving the entire time with no heater. Don't know why it's supposedly so 'essential.'

Because bettas are tropical fish and come from countries where the water temperature is much higher than the average room temperature in a lot of places.

A heater also prevents the water temperature from fluctuating. Drastic fluctuations in temperature can stress fish and leave them very vulnerable to disease or parasites such as velvet.

IMO a heater is one of the most essential pieces of equipment in owning a betta, unless you either live in the tropics or maintain your house at a steady 80-82 degrees.

It all depends on how warm the room is and how stable the temp of the room is NozzALa... My Daughters Betta was in a 2.5 gallon for a while and the temp stayed a steady 82f . That was due to both the size of the tank and the fact it was kept next to my sons Dragon that requires a basking temp of 105-108f therefor obviously a very warm room. However now in a 4 gallon in my daughters room I had to absolutely buy a heater.
