Hey guys! I know this seems like kind of a lame question..but this coming fall I'm going to college and living in the dorms. Right now my two bettas are living in 5 gallon tanks. My question is will it bother them when/if I have to downgrade them to a smaller tank? I haven't seen how much room I have to work with in college so the tanks may be bigger. Will the two of them be okay?

As my user suggests, I live in a dorm also. If your dorm size is a typical 12X12 or larger, you shouldn't have a problem. Most dorms come with a desk. There should be room for both of them and room for you to work, too. I have a 10 gallon community, a 1 gallon and a 3 gallon tank all on my desk, and with plenty of room for me to study. If all goes well, you shouldn't need to downgrade at all!

Although my dorm was a different more apartment style dorm, I had a ton of room for fish. I had one 2.5gal on the sink in our vanity area, I'm going to put my 10gal on my dresser when I go back this fall. Unless my roomies let me put the 10gal in the living room! Either way, there is room on my desk for two 5 gals.

Might I suggest bringing the 5 gallon and dividing it so both can live in a cycled tank?

I'm going into dorm too sami! I just got a betta, and I'm going to get a 5 gallon when I get there. But you should have no problem with both tanks being 5 gallons. The desks should be able to hold it, and if you have a dresser or other storage areas Should be plenty of room, even for all other junk we need.

Xjen you're lucky, seem to be junior/senior with a suite... Usually don't get that till older so can't wait because then I can put fishy in the bathroom!

Yeah I'm a junior. ;P it's 4 girls in one apartment, with 2 bathrooms. But my roomies I got stuck with last semester were uh, rude and dirty. Very dirty.

thanks guys! you've seriously helped so much i really like the idea of maybe putting a 10 gal on my dresser. but, if not, i'll just stick with the two 5 gal tank idea. thanks so much!!

You can cycle a 10 gal too.

i'll definitely cylce a 10 gal. IF my room will fit one. if not, 5 gals with be fine

Depending on the dimension of your two 5 gal tanks, moving them into a 10 gal divided might actually save you more room. My 10 gal tanks are only 20" long and 10" deep. My one 5 gal (currently empty) is about 13" long and 7.5" deep. Two of my 5 gals next to each other would be longer than my 10 gal (total surface area used, tho would be roughly the same). Plus it means you just have to move one tank when breaks come.

Fortunatly, I'm glad I wasn't bitten by the betta bug when I was in a dorm. I would have run out of room. It helped that the only ones available around me at the time where blue veiltails and I already had one.
