That looks more like tail biting to me. I don't see anything wrong in the day 1 pic. If you're referring to the black edges on his fins, this can part of a betta's normal coloration. If it were fin rot the torn parts would have black edges as well, and I don't think fin rot progresses that quickly.

Tail biting has various causes. He is likely stressed. Do you know the temperature of his tank? Bettas need warm water, ideally 78-80 F. Does your filter have a strong flow? Many bettas are bothered by too much current.

For now I would stop using the aquarium salt and get a heater unless you're in a very warm location.

Salt isn't necessary since he doesn't have an infection. I'm not sure what's causing his agitation. When you change the water, is the new water the same temperature as the old water? What brand of dechlorinator are you using?

Some fish just tail bite out of boredom, but since this started right when you got him I feel that it's stress related.

i use nutrafin. the water is kept and treated a day before the change. so that all the temperatures are the same. he still eats daily but i dont see him pooping. his tail doesn't seem worse then yesterday. so i will stop putting in salt and see how it goes. will leave him in the quarantine tank for another month so that the main tanks filter can complete its cycling.

Thank you so much. feel much better knowing its not fin rot. will keep updating.

Just thought of something else - when you change his bowl water, are you netting him out? Bettas hate hate hate being netted and can stay grumpy for a while after, so it's better to use a cup or ladle.

Anyway, it sounds like he should be fine. You may want to think about switching to a high quality pellet food (people here love New Life Spectrum and Omega One), since flake foods aren't the best for bettas. The use of fillers can cause issues with constipation.

he seems so smart to me. Like he know when im looking at him. he faces the platy tank to see the crazy pregnant platy swimming up and down. i can see his eyes looking left and right, but totally ignore his own reflection.

Really want him to get better.
