Housing
What size is your tank? 2.5 Gallon
What temperature is your tank? 74-76degrees
Does your tank have a filter? No
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? No
Is your tank heated? No
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? None

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? Nutrafin Max and Freeze Dried Bloodworms.
How often do you feed your betta fish? He was being fed 2 times per day with a small bit of each food by my mom (I thought that was way too much). I've dropped it down to a small pinch of one or the other food a day, giving him a day or two break in between.

Maintenance

How often do you perform a water change? Once a week full water changes. Though since he's been sick, i've been doing 100 percent water changes every 2 or 3 days.
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? 100 percent
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change?
Was just using Betta Safe water conditioner, but since he's been sick, I bought and have been using Amquel Plus and Novaqua Plus. About 1/4 teaspoon each, and sometimes Nutrafin Aqua Plus to reduce stress.

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? His fins are ragged and splitting, his top fin is white and brownish and pretty much almost gone. :(
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? He's been staying at the top or bottom of the tank alot more then usual, but he still eats when I feed him, still swims around and acts happy, his fins are just droopy alot.
When did you start noticing the symptoms? About a week and a half ago.
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? Started using the new water conditioners, have been doing full water changes ever 2-3 days. I finally got some API Fungus Cure and Maracyn 2 but I wasn't sure if you could put them both in a the same time so I only put in the API Fungus Cure at the moment.
Does your fish have any history of being ill? No.
How old is your fish (approximately)? I got him from Petco, but i've had him for about 5 months.

I've been reading and reading up on fin rot till i'm blue in the face. I haven't tried the AQ Salts yet because the guy at the pet store told me he didn't think a Betta Fish needed them. Apparently Bettas need alot of things they're not supposed to. I didn't think they needed a filter or a heater either, so I haven't been using those although I did get him a heater but it's a little small for his 2.5 gallon tank so I ended up not putting it in there. I've heard about cycling a tank but I didn't think i'd need to do that with 100 percent water changes every week. I'm looking into getting him a 5 gallon tank so I can put the heater in if he survives..which i'm seriously hoping he does because i'm going to be a wreck if not. He seems to be doing okay with the treatment so far, he's still swimming around and being active, but his fins aren't getting any better. Any help would be much appreciated!

Turns out, I think my tank may only be a one gallon tank. I looked it up on petco.com and it says one gallon. I really hope I didn't over medicate my fish. :( How good of a chance is there for a betta to recover from this? I'd really like my fish to survive.
I hate to bump this, but I really need some help. My fish seems to be getting worse. The holes in his bottom fin are growing instead of getting better. Is it possible this could be bacterial and not fungal, and if so, is it safe to put the Maracyn in with the Fungus Cure or should I continue the Fungus Cure treatment and wait a few days to try the Maracyn? I'm just scared he's going to die if I don't help him and he really means alot to me. Any help at all would be appreciated!
I can't tell from the picture, but is there a black outline around the infected area?
How often do you do water changes?

They do not need filters as long as you keep up on water changes - 100% 1X a week and a 50% 1X a week

Its possible he is bitting his fins. Did he loose alot of fin in a short period of time?
If he is bitting, medicine won't work and he may or may not stop depending on if you can figure out the cause of the biting - anger, boredom, stress, just becasue he can...

Either way, I would put him in Aquarium salt - which will help stop any infections and keep up with the 100% changes. AQ salt is 1 teaspoon per gallon and can be used for up to 14 days.

Take a 1 gallon milk jug, fill it with water, add in 1 teaspoon of AQUARIUM SALT. mix it up, wait for the remaining salt to disolve. Add in conditioner. Replace existing water with the salt water and acclimate the fish back into the water.

I usually mix it up and leave it out overnight so the water n the jug is about the same as the water in the tank if you dont have a heater.

If you can get stress coat, that will help with fin regrowth.

I have amquel plus too. I think you are only supposed to use a few drops per gallon.

I don't see a black outline, but there is a brownish red on his top fin. It's weird because it looks like he gained some color back on the top fin but the bottom ones still look horrible and look like they have gotten worse. I am going to the LPS today to see if I can get him a bigger tank and some AQ salt. I heard that AQ salt was supposed to be really good to put in the tank at all water changes, but is it only really good to put in while he's sick? The guy at the pet store tried to tell me AQ salt wasn't good for bettas, so thats why I didn't get any in the first place. I don't think they have stress coat at my LPS because it's super small and all they really carry is a bunch of stuff for dogs, but I am going to try to order some online.

Also, I don't think he bites his fins, I'm not 100 percent sure, but I've never seen him bite himself, so i'm pretty sure it isn't that. His top fin hasn't ever really looked that great since I got him from Petco. It's always looked a little off to me, but I thought that was normal. This is my first betta by the way, so i'm still learning about them. It's only when I saw strings of it starting to come off that I got really worried...and then it seemed like it just progressed rapidly during the process of about two weeks. He did have a plastic plant in his tank...which i've since removed to see if that could have possibly been the culprit, but even with the removal of it he doesn't seem to be doing well.

I will try the AQ salt, but how do I acclimate him to it? Sorry, i'm not sure what exactly that means.

Ugh, Well, I was cleaning out his tank tonight and when I was trying to put him back in..he wouldn't go into his net and jumped out of his cup and onto my dining room table. I couldn't catch him so he was flopping around and I grabbed a paper towel to pick him up and finally got him to go back into the tank. One of his smaller fins at his sides wasn't working for a while, but now it looks like it's working again. I feel like I stressed him out so much he might die. :( Is there any way to help him without doing so many water changes because I think changing the water every two days is really stressing him out and only hurting the condition. I feel like a horrible person now.
MY daughter's little betta -hates- water changes and being caught, too. You might find catching him in a cup works better than a net, as the water when you dip the cup in will sort of suck the fish inside the cup, avoiding chases. If you miss, just wait for him to surface and try again. Even little mister stress-head over here, who is great at wedging himself behind his heater in protest, is getting used to this. :-D

I think it's important to keep up water changes in small tanks/hospital tanks. Just rty to make them as calm as possible for the fish. I feed both of ours in the cup (one pellet) and another on release from the tank, I find this chills them out pretty quickly.

maybe others have other methods. I'd like to hear some alternatives too.

Oh - and I do hope your betta is well, soon.
Thank you both for the advice. I really appreciate it!! I think i'm getting as stressed as he is because I love this fish to death and I'm so upset that he'll die. I've gotten all of 6 hours of sleep in the past 3 days worrying about him. I am going to order him a 3 gallon tank and a heater soon and pray that he survives long enough to see them. Thanks again!
Well this is day 5 of his API Fungus treatment and he's looking worse. His top fin gained a little color back, but his bottom fins look worse and keep turning whiter and whiter in patches. Is it possible this is something other then Fin Rot? I can post more pictures up later on today if that helps. I am going to begin doing AQ salt treatments tomorrow, but if the API Fungus cure didn't work...then it makes me skeptical about the AQ Salt treatment. I have the Maracyn 2 still as well, but I don't want to overdose him on all these medications if I don't have to. Any advice?
Okay, hopefully this pictures show a little better of whats going on. This is AFTER the 5 day treatment on API Fungus. He looks worse to me. He is now in the AQ salt, hopefully it will help. I am really worried about my Cap'n Jack Sparrow. :(

 He's looking worse again today. I don't understand why his top fin is gaining it's color back at the top...but the white is spreading to his body. I am so scared for this guy! Is there anyone out there who has any better suggestions? Should I just wait it out and keep the AQ salt in there and pray that the condition changes? I really don't want this fish to die, it would kill me. Someone please help! :( Does the white mean bad or good? And if he's getting better..how will I know? Will the white spots get color back?
Ok my betta just got over fin rot what worked for me was putting him back in the small cup he came in i added a small bit of mella fix to his cup and a tiny bit of quick cure (blue liquid drops) i then sat his cup in his tank (you may have to prop it up with something) then every day completely change the water with water from your main tank MAKE SURE YOU COMPLETELY CLEAN THE CUP WITH WARM WATER. it took my fish about a week to get over it and this may not be the best way but it worked for me. Hope he gets better soon
I really hate to keep bumping this, but he's getting worse. Is there any possible way this could be Columnaris instead of fin rot? And if so, do I need to use the Maracyn 2 plus the AQ salt?
i would go ahead and use maracyn 2 which you have, api fungus won't do anything for the bacterial infection and this seems likely a bacterial problem, you can use with the salt it shouldnt interact
I haven't done the Maracyn yet, but i'm planning on putting it in his tank tonight. I've just been adding 1tbs of AQ salt every time I do his water changes which is every other day. It seems like his top fin is doing really well. It gained it's color back and looks like it might be growing back, but his bottom fins are worse. What was once white is now looking blackish brown..and one of his fins is still falling off. :( Hopefully the Maracyn helps. Thanks alot for the help!
