Fin rot or columnaris?

About a week and a half ago I noticed my Betta Thor had some brown discoloration on his tail, and one small tear. I put him in my hospital tank and started an AQ salt treatment with 100% daily water changes (1tsp per gallon pre diluted salt). After 7 days I gave him a dose of Kanaplex, and his tail got worse so I stopped. As of today, he has been on two days of just 100% water changes and is not improving.

A little while ago my boy Loki died of columnaris. He was always susceptible to fungal infections so I assumed that was why he was infected while my other two boys were fine. After that I cleaned his tank out and got another Betta, who is currently doing fine along with my third boy.

Thor was totally fine up until now. I always do 50% water changes every week, feed good pellets and use prime. I don't know why my guys keep getting sick :( each have their own heated and filtered 10 gallon. Thor was never in the tank where my previous Betta with columnaris was, but has been in a side tank I use when vacuuming my gravel. I thoroughly cleaned that as well, but I'm wondering if I missed some bacteria. The information below is on his current hospital tank.

Housing:

How many gallons is your tank? 3
Does it have a filter? Yes
Does it have a heater? Yes
What temperature is your tank? 76
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? No
Does your Betta have tank mates? What kind? None

Food:
What food brand do you use? New Spectrum Betta Formula
Do you feed flakes or pellets? Pellets
Freeze-dried? No
How often do you feed your Betta? How much? 4 pellets daily with one fasting day per week

Maintenance:
Before your Betta became ill how often did you perform a water change? Once a week
What percentage of water did you change? 50%
Do you vacuum the substrate or just dip out water? Vacuum gravel
What additives do you use? Prime

Water Parameters:
What are your water parameters? Please give exact numbers. If tested by pet store please get exact numbers. "Fine" or "Safe" won't help us help you.

Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
pH:
Hardness (GH):
Alkalinity (KH):

Symptoms and Treatment:
When did you first notice the symptoms? 1 1/2 weeks ago
How has your Betta’s appearance changed? Brown tail discoloration, frayed fins, one small discoloration spot on his head
How has your Betta’s behavior changed? He is acting the same as he usually does
Is your Betta still eating? Yes
Have you started treating your Betta? If so, how? 7 days of AQ salt with water changes, one day of Kanaplex
Does your Betta have any history of being ill?
How long have you owned your Betta? Was he or she ill or suffering some sort of damage when purchased? About 3 years now, he has been healthy until now

I think that is (sadly) columnaris. I don't know what I can tell you that can help you. >.< I've dealt with literally every diasease but this one! I'm sorry! If it reaches his body......

I have dealt with Columnaris and it is a yucky horrible disease!

This is a site that gives you a lot of information about it:
http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Columnaris.html

and another site I found helpful:
http://www.myaquariumclub.com/columnaris-and-what-i-have-learned...-1689.html

One of the vet techs will hopefully come on and tell you if they see columnaris in your fish.

If it is Columnaris you will want to treat with KanaPlex and Furan 2 as well as AQ/MB baths nightly. That is 9 drops Methylene Blue to 1 teaspoon Aquarium Salt. You will want to start the treatment asap but first you will need to be sure it is Columnaris. I hope that this info helps! (it looks like Columnaris to me too)

This stuff is so contagious! I cleaned everything with Bleach and salt, dried it and then cleaned it with hydrogen peroxide just to be sure I finally got rid of it. I sure hope that you can get him started on the treatment right away.

If you don't have Furan 2 you can use Jungle Fungus Clear as it has the ingredients in it also which can be purchased even at Walmart.

Hello! So, I did a round of Furan-2 and Kanaplex. Waited a few days and did methlyne blue baths with AQ salt. Thor was doing better and even had some tail regrowth. I've been keeping him in a 3 galling with every other day water changes. It was going well until a week ago when I noticed a white fuzzy spot on his body. I immediately started Furan-2 and Kanaplex (I did a total of four more doses each). Now he is in unmedicated water, but he now has some discoloration around his eyes, the same white spot on his body, and I've noticed some white fuzz in the water. He's still acting and eating fine. Is there anything else I can do???? I will add a picture tomorrow.

Please post a picture so that we can see that white spot. So you are saying it went away with the KanaPlex & Furan 2? You stopped the treatment and it came back, correct? You should be doing nightly MB/AQ salt baths with the meds as it helps them to work better. Columnaris is a difficult bacteria to get rid of once the fish gets it. So please post the pictures so that others can help too! Thanks!

I sure hope that we can help your lil guy!

Oh my gosh I thought the photo was posted days ago! I guess it didn't go through on my phone. The first photo here is the one I originally going to post, the rest are from tonight. It seems like the white spot has decreased in size. I've been keeping him in 1tsp per gallon with every other day 100% water changes.

I am having trouble seeing if it is actually Columnaris but lets treat it as if it is because he is rebounding which is typical of this bacteria. I wish one of the Vet techs or someone with more medical expertise would take a look at your photos. If it is the salt will help kill it. How many rounds of KanaPlex and Furan 2 have you given him? (A round is one complete cycle of medicine that is recommended.) The one thing I found with my guy was that he would get a little better and I would stop the treatment and it would return. I found out that I should have kept giving the meds until it cleared up and go another round after that. You do have to be careful not to overload his lil body with meds but you do have to give him enough to get rid of it and it is a booger of a deal to get rid of. Keeping salt in his tank is good but you can't go more than 10 days doing that without damage to his internal organs from what I have read. The MB/AQ baths can be used indefinitely and aid in the KanaPlex/Furan 2 in doing the job of killing the bacteria. I had to give my fish nightly baths for months and I believe that is why he lived so long with the disease. You might also try feeding the KanaPlex internally as that gets in his system better. Is he still active and swimming around?

I don't think treating with salt alone will get rid of Columnaris. I have read about people doing the high salt until the fish passes out too but you can also kill the fish doing that if you aren't extremely careful. Also one of the articles I read by a gentleman that is greatly admired in Aquarium circles claims that if salt baths cured your fish it was not Columnaris but another disease that is sometimes confused with Columnaris.

Hello! Sorry for the delay in an update. In the last couple months I graduated college, enrolled in graduate school, got engaged and I'm in the process of moving into an apartment with my fiance. I did more salt baths and then have just been keeping his water clean (every other day full changes). He is doing well and is slowly gaining fin regrowth. He is staying in the hospital tank until I'm sure everything is gone. Thank you everyone for helping!
