Evening folks,

i recently picked up a 20gallon tank for £40 on gumtree, IMO an absolute steal as it came with a filter, heater, 2x T8 lighting and natural gravel.

Now i normally stick to black gravel and silk plants but liked the look of the gravel, so picked up some large Amazon swords, Anubias Nana and bacopa caroliniana which are doing great.

I moved my Veil tail Rojo in and picked up a shoal of 6 neon tetras after reading on this site that they are usually a good mix, well lets just say that after fishing 3 neons out missing 90% of their body in 3 days and rehoming the other 3 with missing tails. Rojo isn't a community betta, i've moved him back to his 5 gallon tank and plan on trying my hand at some Honey Gourami and cherry barbs. (i've put some of my platys and 6 of my golden WCMM in the tank for the time being to keep the cycle going).

Anyway long story short, i was in my LFS today and picked up 3 bunches of plants, i think i have a smaller sword and java fearn (i'm new to the plants so thats total guess work) and i have no idea what the first plant is. It's dark green and has a red trim around, don't even know if its actually aquatic.

Can some of the more experienced out there help identify these please?

Thanks :)

From left to right, my guesses are:

A crypt - probably red wendtii
Tropica Sword / Echinodorus Parviflorus
Hygrophilia Augustifolia

Thank you, using what you suggested i google imaged and matched the plants to the following;

Bronze wendtii
Echinodorus Parviflorus
hygrophila-angustifolia-rubra

now to go read up on how to care for them and if they'll live :)

You should be good with a low tech setup if you're running that for now. All 3 species will do well in low light, no/low co2

Just get root tabs, especially for the crypt and sword
Any particular brand of root tabs? (I'm in the UK).

Side note; Currently have a big bag of miracle grow potting compost that I'm thinking of putting under the gravel. Can I do this with fish in or so I need to keep them elsewhere for a while?

Look for osmocote+. If that's not available in the UK, then go for the Seachem or API Root Tabs, although those are much more expensive.

As for the dirt, AVOID IT if you're new to tanks. Even half an inch of a dirt cap can cause problems if you're new to aquariums or planted tanks.

Thanks again for the advice. I've had tank set ups for over 15 years now. Never a betta or a planted tank, so I'll take your advice and avoid dirt for the time being.

http://www.tesco.com/direct/miracle..._cmp=ppc_g__&gclid=CPLBiICs-74CFSsTwwodA3kA0A are these what I'm looking for? They don't straight they are for aquariums but I'm not sure if they would be OK?

I use dynamite fertilizers, but can use osmocote plus also. If your gonna do this don't forget the gel capsules size 00. Also don't go crazy with it, because adding to much can cause ammonia spikes. I'll link a video to help you out.

Video really helped thanks.

That's awesome, I can make around a thousand for the price of 10 api tabs. ;)
