Hey gang,

So upon getting sand for my 5.5 gal, I read that it needed to be washed. Great! I washed it several times until water ran clear and it didn't have that nasty "just out of the bag" smell. I have the Petco black sand, basic stuff.

After adding it to the tank and gradually adding water, what ho? Tiny bubbles! Everywhere....Covering the surface, hiding beneath the surface, etc. Not only that, but there are bits of sand floating on the surface.

Have I missed a step somewhere, or is there a solution to rid the sand of the tiny army of bubbles?

I don't think so, I get bubbles when I clean my smaller tanks. give it a bit they will probably go away. Sounds like you haven't had sand in there long enough to cause a gas issue. Also, Sand is dusty, You'll have floating goop.

When you first put it in there are oxygen spaces under the substrate. Sift through it with your hands so it can settle properly..

I agree with everything above. I have black petco sand in my ten gallon and it did the same thing when I first put it in. I went through and popped some of the larger bubbles and the sand sunk back to the bottom. You will have some dust floating for a while but it will settle and look great. That's just the nature of the beast.
