Several updates to make.
Firstly, I’ve added some cory catfish and a filter to the tank. I added three corys about a week ago and at first it was iffy but the bettas have settled in to having some new tank mates. I wanted something to help me clean the tank when there’s fry and thought corys and a filter would be the best option. I have one spotted, one peppered, and one upside down. The filter is a fluval aquaclear w yuh zeolite instead of charcoal in a (failed) attempt to preserve the black water effect I have in the tank.
Also, I’ve finally named the bettas! When I was picking out the corys my dad (accidentally) named one squishy and I didn’t think it was fair for the corys to have names and not the bettas. I chose Vietnamese names since that’s where the fish are from and I couldn’t think of anything else I liked better. I just had to use google translate and I didn’t pick the top translations so they’re likely very loose translations. I named the male sốt sắng (or sắng for short) meaning fire since his vibrant red reminds me of embers or flames. The female is xảo trá (or xảo) meaning cute.
lastly, WE HAVE MORE EGGS!! I’ve been feeding them really well since last time and before the changes they seemed ready to spawn again but I wanted to get everything set up before there were eggs in the tank. When I added the other fish and the filter they took a day or two to adjust before the male started experimenting with different locations for a new bubble nest. Apparently he settled on a tiny little on in the corner behind the heater.that was his favorite place to hide before he started warming up to me a bit (yay!) so I suppose I’m not surprised he deemed it a safe place for his babies.
