I like my sponge filter and the fact that it provides low current as well as aeration for my nitrifying bacteria. But...the air pump sure is noisy. I've tried a few unsuccessful methods of muffling it:

-in a box with crushed newspaper
-in a box with plastic bags
-in a hanging plastic bag with plastic bags

That last was the most effective, but still too noisy. Any suggestions?

I put mine on a potholder. Though I got the Tetra Whisper pump, and it is already very quiet. There is just a low hum with it on the potholder.

Being in the box might be making it vibrate more.

I've tried putting it on and under things like sponges, bath-towels, insulation and foam peanuts.

So far, crumpled plastic grocery bags in a hanging grocery bag is the quietest. Still too noisy for listening to music, as far as my ear is concerned.

My cycled tank runs a submerged canister filter. That's acceptably quiet. I'd settle for that.

Tetra Whisper, eh? I'll look. Thanks, Wystearya.
