Hi FishandBirdLover,

For a half gallon tank, they need to change the water every other day. There is no getting around that. The water has got to be pristine. And it would be good to have a thermometer to track the temp of that water.

I would start with a little aquarium salt, and maybe an Indian almond leaf. Or they could do an aquarium salt bath, and not add it directly to the half gallon.

If it doesn't get better, than I would suggest a methylene blue dip or two.

Or, if they have a safe net that won't mess up his slime coat, they could net him, and swab that area with a little hydrogen peroxide using a q-tip. As long as they don't get peroxide in his eyes or near his mouth or gills, he will be fine. But this takes a very, very steady hand. If the person doing this isn't prepared, they could hurt him really badly by mistake. Just a word of caution.

Hope this helps!
