Hi everyone, hopefully someone is able to recognize what's causing my guy's symptoms here...

Came home from work and my betta was sulking around the bottom of his tank. On one side, the area behind the gill right where the fin begins, is quite swollen. It appears to have a mushy white appearace (my fish is blue). I've read around but this doesn't seem to match anything i've read about.

Is anyone able to help??

What size tank is he in?
Is it heated? What's the temp?
Do you use De-chlorinator?
How often do you do water changes? How much do you take out/put in?

Hi again - he is in a 3 gallon heated tank. It is a consistent 25 celcius (77 F). I do water changes every few weeks, but always use a water conditioner. Generally, the water changes are no more than 25% (i'll admit it is generally more of a top-up than a change). The bulge is still there today, and doesn't match any bacterial or fungal infections ive seen online. He did get a new betta leaf hammock so im wondering if he's got his gill stuck in it somehow and caused an injury. It looks more like a growth, though...

Not enough water changed might be the issue. In a 3 gal tank, you need to be doing at least one 50% change a week and then a 100% change once a month. Be sure to get all of the poo off the bottom as well.
Toping up the water doesn't remove the harmful ammonia that's still concentrated in the tank.
I'd do a 100% change now and then keep to the schedule I listed above.
