Hey guys!

Have been dealing with swim bladder issues with Tavington for about a week now, and have been feeding brine shrimp sparingly.

Tonight I went to feed him, and noticed his gills got stuck "open." He tried but couldn't eat, and couldn't breathe, and gasped at the surface of the tank for a minute.

After about 5 minutes, his gills returned to normal and he was breathing hard but otherwise seemed ok.

This happened twice tonight. Never seen anything like it. I've had Tavi for about 6 months and he has been very healthy until now.

Edit to add he is not flaring in first pic. This appears to be gill malfunction or illness.

Water as follows:
5 Gallons
77°F
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 5ppm
First pic shows gill protrusion. Second is 5 minutes later when they returned to normal.

He could have just need flaring. Do you have any tank mates or a front shot?

No tank mates. Definitely not flaring, unfortunately. His gill covers remained flush with his body.

I would look into hyperplasia and try Indian almond leaves for treatment.
