Hey there,

Got my new fin-baby today and already so in love!

I grew up with outdoor ponds but nothing indoors so this world is all new to me, but wanted to come in and say hi

Attached a pic of new fin-baby:

He has a slight tear in his fin (which you may be able to see) and a little pin prick hole in his dorsal fin, which I will keep an eye on but hoping his new home will sort it out with better conditions than a pet shop could give. I hope! If not, I'll be coming back for med advice in a couple of days.

Ohh and if you have any name suggestions I'd love to hear them

Oh, wait until he decides you take too long to give him his food! It's like they throw a little tantrum, unless that's just my boys

He's still there now...

Is this normal for a new betta? He's been in his tank 5 hours!!! I was all ready for shy and hiding, and not wanting to eat and being 'bunged up' but no issue there either

I will walk up to my tank and my boy will come up to the front of the tank, watch me get his food, then start swimming back and forth really fast until I give him his food <3

Aww, that's so sweet. Wonder what they're thinking... I haven't established feed times yet as I wasn't expecting this behaviour. He's gonna be so demanding. And I'm a soft touch, it's gonna be hard to not give in.

Yep! Some are more outgoing than others and some also just like to be incredibly snoopy. Sounds like you're gonna have a feisty boy

What a beautiful betta, I wanna get a darker colored betta myself one day! As for names I don't think I'm the best at them but I immediately thought of some sort of astronomical name, maybe like
Procyon
Sirius
Arcturus
Antares
(they are the names of some of the brightest stars which doesn't really make sense for a black betta but oh well haha, they sound cool)

Ahh they are cool names I think photo probably doesn't do his colour justice.. he has this gorgeous blue shimmer that looks like mica powder:

Photos defintally do NOT do our bettas justice, I know that for sure! My boy never lets me get a good photo as he is always swimming back and forth when he sees me
I don't think I've never gotten a photo with him showing off all his fins
guess hes a bit camera shy? 🤣

Keep is short and simple; or one that has a cute nickname. Mine have been Sunshine (Sonny), Maraschino (Chino), both of them ave passed; and now, New Fish/Newf (dull, but I couldn't handle a lovey name after my Chino passed). He hears and knows his name(meal time!!), is a happy, feisty, ever-hungry baby with 6 neon tetras to keep him company and busy! And challenged for food at feeding time. Every so often he joins in on a game of tag with them. I will admit, I do do a neon-count at meal time just to make sure they're still getting along. I can shout "Newf!" across the room and he immediately starts checking for food.

Wow, I didn't see that blue shimmer, he looks amazing! (Maybe give him the name of a blue star?) You have further persuaded me to get a dark betta haha

Ah thanks, I love all those name and similar to what i had suggested. Name had to be a family decision (nightmare!) but we have a name now:

Wingardiumleviosa (face palm right here) - honestly, who thought kids was a good idea

But!!!!

We're calling him Levi for short
