I am worried that my new betta, Obbie, will hurt himself.

After doing my first water change with Obbie, he has become fixated on his area around his filter. I think he is able to see the reflection of himself there because he keeps flaring at the glass. I turned off the light to hopefully cut down on the reflection. He could also just be flaring at something he sees outside the tank, which is something he has done before.

With the filter on, Obbie had to fight really hard to get to and stay in the spot he wanted to be. I use part of a water bottle with the edges covered in duck tape to slow down the flow, but it is still very strong. I ended up turn off the filter so that he wouldn't hurt himself.

I have no idea what to do to make sure he stays safe and health. I hope this is just a short phase, and that I am just being a paranoid new owner.

Does anyone have suggestions or similar experiences?

What size tank? What kind of filter?

Usually using AQ sponge to baffle the flow -- both intake and outflow works pretty well. As long as he is not avoiding the filter, I'd say the flow is not too strong for him.

It's better if you can keep the filter on all the time.

Random flaring is usually something they outgrow.
