Hi all,

I recently posted about my new giant betta fish, Taika.
He has been loving his tank and has been adapting very well to his new home.... The only issue is that we have to relocate for about a week for asbestos removal. Everything, including Taika and his home of course, has to be temporarily moved out of the apartment.

Does anyone have any advice for relocating him for about a week? How do I make sure I don't break the nitrogen cycle during our move?
Should I set up a new small aquarium somewhere else with some of his plants, rocks, filter media, etc, and just move him in a cup?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

How long of a trip will you be making in the relocation process? If you have to move his tank, then I would remove at least 75% of the water, depending on the size of the tank, and just bring some treated tank water with if you have to so you can fill it again when you get where you are going. One thing to be sure of is when you do fill the tank again, make sure the water you add is the right temperature. The filter material (along with the beneficial bacteria) should be fine as long as you keep it wet. I would move him in a separate container, like his cup, if he can still fit in it, or maybe a critter carrier, especially if you aren't going very far. The smaller space will help cut down on the jostling of moving him around as long as you are careful. And if you have any Stressguard by Seachem, you can always use some of that. It is used for shipping fish and helps with fish stress. The farthest I have gone with my fish was maybe an hour and a half away, and this worked for me. :)

Thank you so much! We hope to not be traveling very far at all. We do have to move the tank but I can make sure the filter and items in the tank stay nice and wet so the bacteria doesn't die off. I will also be purchasing some stress guard and doing my best to make sure this is as painless as possible for my little guy.
Thanks again
