Help! Swollen Betta!

487 Views 14 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  BerryBlue256
When I got home today I noticed that one of my sorority females, Strawberry, was very swollen on her stomach and also had quite a bit of swelling on both sides of her back (I guess you could say?) Her stomach is squarish in shape and it worried me a lot because I didn't feed them that morning and she usually doesn't fill with eggs that much, ever. So it couldn't be bloating. What worries me most though are her sides. She does seem to swim a bit "locked up" like she can't move as well or she's in pain. But other then that she's fine. Swimming all around (as much as she can) and playing with the other females. I really don't know what to do. I got the best picture I could.

I hate to ask but can you get more pictures of her? From the top and the sides as much as you can? The more pictures the easier it is for us to help!
yes. can you provide more photos?
I tried to get some. I also had to do each picture in a different post because I can't seem to figure out how to put them all in one.

This picture makes her face and eyes look horrible but nothing is wrong with them so don't freak out. And also she has this silver colored spot on her side. I read that it could be ammonia poisoning. But she came like that and it never grew.

No she doesn't have a tear or hole in her fin. She also came like that.

I hope these pictures can help. They were hard to get because she's so lively
what do you feed your fish?
I feed them 2 foods. Top Fin fish flakes and Aqua Culture Betta pellet food. Sometimes I give them the flakes, sometimes I give them the pellets. I do it just so they kind of have a variety. And sometimes, not often I feed them frozen bloodworms. But they haven't had those for a while.
Okay, well both of your foods are bad quality so most likely she's bloated from all the fillers in the food and you've just noticed it (one possibility). Fillers are things companies put in the food to...well, fill it and make it so they don't have to use the expensive good stuff, so the food is generally cheaper too. You get what you pay for :)

I do recommend New Life Spectrum if you can find it, they only have one filler in the first three ingredients (first three are generally the more important ones, they make up most of the food) and it's Whole Wheat which is a binder to keep the food together so it's not too bad. Other fillers are Corn and Soybean, those are not digestible for our food which can cause back ups and blockages which makes the fish bloated when they can't poop normally.

Is she still swimming fine? The bump on the latter part of her body is just her swim bladder, that's pretty normal for you to see the outline of the swim bladder, especially if the fish are older.

Alright. I'll see if my petstore has that food. She's still swimming a bit rough. She doesn't seem to want to bend her body when she turns. Either she doesn't want to or it hurts to or she just can't because of the swelling. But she's still swimming around. She does, though, rest a lot more on plants and the decorations.
Okay, she could have a small infection in her swim bladder so I recommend to find some KanaPlex (generally not sold in store so you'll have to order it online) to help fight the infection off before it becomes anything bad or just worse.
If you can't find New Life Spectrum. Omega One Pellets are good as well. Make sure you get pellets and not flakes.
I'll see if I can get some
