I had a bettafish before, and I have a 1 gallon aquarium with a filter(I think it's the kind that pull the dirty stuff down into the gravel. Do you think that's enough if I change part of the water daily. If it isn't sufficient I would like to get a bigger tank and start a sorority, but I don't know the minimum amount of gallons, I'm thinking about 5 females. I'd anyone could help me get started with bettafish that would be great. Thanks

A 2.5-5 gallon would be better but I know that people can make 1 gallon tanks work, they just need more water changes. I believe the minimum tank size for a sorority is 20 gallons with lots of plant cover.

Also remember for a sorority you're going to need a backup plan for if it doesn't work out, so you're either going to need 5+ extra tanks on hand or someone that can take a few bettas off you quickly if things go pear shaped.

I agree that starting with one betta in a smaller tank is a great idea. That way you can ease yourself in and ensure you enjoy keeping bettas. After a while with one you could get a second betta and try a different set up. I did this, I had one in a planted tank, then after a few months I got a second with just silk plants in the tank. After experimenting with different filters etc I've settled for planted tanks.

Starting with one is also a great way to get your head around cycling and water change routines. Also once you have a cycled tank you can seed filter media and set up more tanks from the first tank :)
