Hey all,
Currently own 2 betta fish and keep them in 5 gallon tanks in my bedroom. One is a female dragon scale and the other is a male copper koi. I'm thinking of getting a third, a long-finned one to go in a smaller 3 gallon tank I have laying around since I have heard that they swim more slowly and my stocking options for fish are limited. A lady at Petsmart said I could keep African Dwarf Frogs, Zebra Danios or White Cloud Minnows in there and I don't know how good that advice is. I've been thinking of a betta and my brother told me that he sees no point in me getting another one. I told him that I like the huge variety of colors and fin types and that they also have different personalities. Sure, my room is small, but I can afford it. Anyway, tell me about yourselves. Any similar experiences? Feel free to include pictures.

I have 3 wonderful babies. 🐠🥰

Samson- sweet “old guy.” (Blue king)
Arthur- shy, new boy. (White king)
Khaleesi- feisty little girl. (Opal dumbo)

My boyfriend says I have a problem and if I get any more fish he’s staging an “intervention” to deal with my “addiction.” 🙄
I’m NOT addicted…..BUT there iS one last open electrical outlet remaining with no aquarium hooked up to it……yet….. 😉🐠🐠🐠🐠

Right now I only have one betta, Jinx, who is a gorgeous blue female veiltail living in a 10g (no picture, sadly, because it's super blackwater and impossible to see her atm). I also have other tanks, though, including a 30 gallon community tank with several species in it and a shrimp-only 10 gallon! I swear, if I had the money, I'd buy all the fish!! Bettas specifically have so much amazing variation as you said- it's incredible and I fell in love with them for it! As long as you can take care of them all, you can never have to many!

To respond specifically to the advice your Petsmart assistant gave you: you should not keep any of the animals she suggested in a 3 gallon haha. African Dwarf Frogs I've heard require a minimum of 15 gallons as they prefer to have a friend or two. Zebra Danios need a minimum of 20 gallons, preferably more, as they get relatively large (~2"), need a school (5+ fish), and are extremely active and zip around the tank constantly- they would feel cramped in a smaller tank. White Clouds are much the same, needing a minimum tank size of 10 gallons, needing a school, and getting a decent size (~1.5"). The only thing good to keep in a 3 gallon is inverts like shrimp or snails or a single betta fish with no tankmates, so I would get that betta if you're already thinking about it! You're right that long-finned bettas swim slower and prefer quieter tanks, so a boy with big fins would likely do fine in your empty tank.

Hey, it's you again! Yeah, I know I said in my last post I was gonna use the tank for isopods, but I'm an incredibly indecisive person and constantly change my mind especially after seeing a blue veiltail betta at a local pet store. He was the only animal they had  All the other betta fish got sold and he's been there for weeks and he was following my finger and everything in his cup. 🥺But yeah, at Petsmart those tanks had little stickers that said that they were suitable for 3 gallon tanks and the fish specialist there said the same thing (she was using the inch of fish per gallon rule) I knew I had to do some more research since it didn't sound right.

I currently have 15 bettas.
  • 2 sororities of 6 females each. One set in a 20g tall with 6 zebra danios and a Platinum Sailfin Molly (who thinks she is a betta). And one set in a 20g long with 5 pygmy corydoras.
  • 2.5 year old male Half-moon Double Tail (my sweet old man) in a 5 gallon.
  • almost 2 year old copper male in a 5 gallon.
  • very large and aggressive female veiltail in a 10 gallon (used to be part of one of the sororities)

So 27 total and 2 giant blue mystery snails, 3 black racer nerites and a bunch of baby rabbit snails.

And my husband thinks my daughter and I definitely have too many fish!
